"Engine Service Required" Intermittant, no apparent fault...

    Hi All

Recently my S60 D5 (2002) has been occasionally showing the "Engine Service Required" message.
Usually always when cold and with no engine light on the dash, no limp mode, in fact it drives and runs fine.
It will disappear if I stop and re-start the engine and not usually reappear.

I realise I need the codes read but my nearest indy is over 50 miles away and I`m trying to narrow it down as much as possible.
I`m thinking the Turbo governor may need cleaning.
    Open to suggestions guys...

You can buy a code reader off the internet for the same price as if not less than, the cost of having a garage read your codes. Try looking on ebay, most to 24 hour delivery too if you order before a certain time.

    Regards

When was the fuel filter last changed?

Change it if it's been a while or you don't know - worked for me.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
Fuel filter was changed over a week ago.
I`d looked into getting a code reader but have heard from several people
that most don`t work correctly on pre 2004 D5`s.
I am looking at cleaning out the Turbo control valve in the next couple of days as a precaution
but this does not seem to be turbo related as it will often come on just after startup when cold
when no boost has been applied.
I had considered vac engine mounts too but I know it`s all a guess without codes...

Try cleaning the mixer pipe mate, may of may not fix the problem but the car will run better for it.

I've got one that works well, it helped me diagnose faulty coil packs back in the summer.

Just a quick update if anyone`s interested.
It turned out to be the clutch position sensor.
Final piece of the puzzle was a couple of days ago when I noticed it only occurred after
dipping the clutch combined with Cruise becoming unavailable.
No sign of any obvious leak from the master cylinder (The usual cause of a failure on this sensor apparently)
so I`ll just change the sensor (£35 ish).

Good news. I had this problem for a bit but I didn't get the info screen warning (my DIM was doing a mental at the time tho) It went away for a few weeks when I cleared the fault code and then came back, coupled with the cruise not working. Not come back for a year now tho.

This is what I had a few weeks ago. Try unplugging the connector and re-plugging the it on the brake angle sensor on the vacuum assist.

Cheerz, I've not had the problem since I had the new DIM. Now that probably didn't affect it but I had a software update at the same time (freebee after I cicked-off about paying £735 for a bloody speedo) which i think may have altered the perameters for error reporting on a few sensors, making it ignore slight fluctuations in the sensor circuit.

well, that's the only reaon I can come up with anyway.

I`d love to see a list of what you`ve done and what it`s cost.

It makes me feel like I`m not the only total loony out there lol.

That said I feel better than my dad who, in the last 6 years has basically "spent" £1300 per year just on
    depreciation!
Never mind interest on the car finance etc.
And then it spat its turbo last month at £600! (55 plate Octavia TDi)
