rust behind front indicators. listen for clicking when turning the steering wheel as the top shock bearings can be bad. also the interior blower can be faulty. it's not the motor but a small control unit that fails listen for the motor changing speeds by itself. rear bushes can fail.

They are no worse than any other on the road and a lot better than most.
Buy one if you fancy one as they are good for 200,000+ miles if serviced properly.
Remember all mechanical equipment can break down regardless at times.

Rear link arm bushes go but the arms are cheap to replace, avoid the GDi (Mitsubishi gasoline injection engine) which is a 1.8 and quite noisy and prone to sludging/coking up due to poor egr design , confusingly they also did a Volvo 1.8 engine. Diesel is a 1.9 Renault unit and pretty reliable and hard to break. The 40 series was based on the Mitsubishi Carisma if memory serves.
Old Car: 855 T5 in Grey and rust (dead and gone, well, most of it !
Missus' ride: Citroen C4 coupe 1.6 HDi,
    Modifications: Nowt.....yet !
Daily driver: 855 R in Black,
Currently nursing a blown head gasket, new engine on its way !
Recent addition: Freshly imported Honda Stepwagon,
Slowly turning into a camper van !

I had heard that the 40 was the first vehicle to use the floorpan used in the Ford Focus, not sure how true that is though. It does share some suspension bushes with mitsis tho'

It was the mk 2 2004 on S40,C70,C30 & V50 that shared the mark 2 focus chassis. I think the s40 v50 t5s make a brilliant buy and are getting cheaper!

Definitely droplinks, rear calipers can seize , Blower resistor can go which you will notice when the blower doesnt work unless turned up to 6. If it blows slow then fast intermittantly then its dry joints/broken solder on the control module which is an easy fix. Well, replacing the resistor is also easy too just a bit of faffing under passenger foot well. Handbrake button can stick but thats nowt nor summat. Bonnet cable is another one that can go too which is a 1 1/2 job max.
