I had relized that it would not be a simple and straight forward job, I done quite few swaps across model ages in the passed and learnt the hard way that nothing is ever the same and connections etc change as the model years roll by, but I'm still just thinking if the worst comes to the worst, its way to good to let die.

Anyway thanks for the warning, but its nothing that I hadn't expected, car manufacturers couldn't make it easy for us or there would be no fun I keeping your car on the road....lol

is this a parallel universe? that had crossed my mind as the v70r awd (phase3) had all kit on test that was fitted to the phase2 V70s so I am led to believe, thus making it a feasible idea as they share similarities, it's just a matter of making it work, the brain and how it's programmed is the limit....I think !!!!

Right, it's unfortunately got to the point when something it has got to be done and just replacing the box like for like, with another s/hand one ( if available ) doesn't seem like a viable plan, just more grief a few thousand miles down the road so here's a few idea's and questions I have about each option I have thought about and I wondered what your thoughts on them are and if anyone has any better solutions.

    1. Manual conversion (will this then throw up problems with the me7 ecu ? as the autobox would appear to be missing)
    2. Rebuild the current autobox with a new solenoid valve unit ( myself !!!! could be a £600+ hinding to nothing or it might work again )
    3. Could a later 5 speed autobox be fitted along with the relevant ecu and run without problems with me7 ecu ?

breaking is not an option, it can take up garage space for as long as it takes to get this fantastic car back on the road, just want to explore the options before ripping it apart and just heading blindly down one route when the may be a better option out there.

    Thanks. Adrain

Option 4 and its abit mad lol.
Do a manual conversion and then find a pre me7 wiring loom and reloom the car and then you have a later engine with a more reliable car .also why you are there put a 960 tb and a early manifold on for more mods and turn that turbo up to 1.35 bar with a remap .i told you it was a it mad but look at the possibilities at that setup on a later car .

I think its very much swings and roundabouts as to the best solution... it all boils down to Cost and preference.

Did Jayne like the Auto and does she prefer it to driving a Manual? If its Auto then have the box re-built, yes it may cost a good chunk and would alleviate any other modifications or part requirements and above all would be guaranteed!

If you go down the manual conversion route consider this... firstly you will need the basics, pedal box and shifter assembly box from a breakers around £50, secondly you would need a Clutch including thrust release bearing this genuine Volvo would be around £250 and a flywheel £50 secondhand or £300 ish new. Also then a gearbox which can be sourced for around £75-100 quid.Using the cheaper options a manual conversion would then cost around £425 or £675 with a new flywheel.

Now I may be mistaken and someone may know however I would expect also if the rear axle has AWD drive gear you would need a 2WD rear axle fitting too in order to do a manual conversion.

A manual AWD gearbox would probably cost a lot more (thats if you can find one).

The propshaft can be removed and the car driven around without any problems (cars with viscous coupling, not sure on haldex models) so converting to a FWD and getting a normal gearbox would be viable

I'm guessing here but it will probably fit. The hard would be the ECUs....

Looking like I will be going down the 5 speed manual awd route this winter as most of the parts are now within my grasp, the only problem to overcome could be some me7 ecu niggles, but I'm sure this can be over come

You can contact RICA as they did a software for XC70 auto using a s60r engine (manual) for me. The ECU is still the xc70 but map has been converted for the manual.
