    gt3076r on 2.4t5

im considering fitting one of these to my 2005 t5. My oil seals are worn and wont be long till it needs a rebuild. That gives me the boring option of a refurb or sumit alot stronger and opens more doors for tuning. Whats the limit of the 2.4 block. Im hoping i could see around 400bhp with a lot more yorque. Opinions please

you will need a forged engine to run that turbo

I thought the GT3076R doesn't have an internal waste gate. The GT3071R would be a better option.

Yup, the GT3071R is the biggest of the GT range with a wastegate, it's what I have on mine

Even if i did need a external wastegate that wouldnt be a issue. Metal work is my trade.

Putting something that big would almost certainly push your peak torque into the all or nothing territory.
I am looking more at the GT2871R or something from the newer GTX range.
Without an LSD you may struggle to put down the torque? there is a limit to how much you can put through the front wheels & still have a driveable car.

I find putting down the torque with just a remap can be tricky, I'd hate to think how pushing the power even further would affect drivability.

Cant say i have any trouble and im running slightly more power. maybe you need to look at your suspension set up. Might be to soft.

I was up at HLM on Friday (investigating my coolant consumption calamity). The chrome vinyl wrapped http://www.j-w-racing.co.uk/ Ford Focus RS (some will have seen it at Trax) is a case in point.
At a glance the peak figures & parts used may send some off to the toilet for a quick handy shandy. Titanium Exhaust system, forged everything - massive Garrett - its all very juicy stuff.

As pointless development projects go - it takes some beating
Torque curve comes upto max torque at about 5.5K & is only 1000 rpm wide. In some respects it looks like a Welsh mountain. At 4000 rpm car is only making 200 bhp - probably not much more than stock.

According to the owner/developer - he can't use it on the road because the titanium exhaust decatted system is so loud he doesnt think her majesty's finest will let him get away with it - not only that the chrome wrap kinda makes it stand out. Taste aside there is something to be said about decatting & keeping a low profile.
So as a road car - it is completely pointless & expensive (I thnk the parts come to a hefty 35 grand?)
Apparently the only way to drive it is off boost otherwise it just mis-handles itself down the road, spinning the wheels in any gear & will try to torque steer itself up the nearest tree. By all accounts this is how the turbo is supposed to be?
It isn't usable as a track day car as the exhaust will break the limits.
So all that is left is a drag car. So if the price of the car is 20K plus all the bits 35K. That's some sum just to be able to do fwd standing quarters?

This is an extreme case - but the turbo is the main let down. Even if you take the chrome wrap away the 1000 rpm wide hillock in the curve (I wish I had a picture of it) from 5000 - 6000 rpm renders the car undriveable.

My conclusion - sometimes less is more.

RT has used his 591bhp T-5R for the shopping run & many more common uses, whats undrivable is down to everyone own tolerances & opinions. Some people don't even like the 960 throttle body as they say it makes the throttle too much like a on-off switch, & thats not exactly adding 100's of bhp

how the power comes in will come down to mapping. but using the 3076 turbo isnt set in stone. theres a good chance ill go smaller as im not after huge power figures.

yes but a very big turbo will make life very top ended. Having spoken to Turbo dynamics today - they were even suggesting going for gt2860 to retain a similar torque profile to what I have now.

I have a small turbo and in the real world feels much quicker than bigger turbo T5s I have driven and owned ,ok she is a bit slow between 150 and 160 on ze autobahn but bottom end and mid range is awesome and 470
Nm is pleanty through the front wheels. Dave is right in what he says and evo compared a tunned
Focus st verse a standard rs, the st had quicker 0-60 and in gear times ok the rs would be quicker at 3 figure speeds and have a higher top end and round the track due to better suspension. but it's like comparing 15 g and 16 t the old 15g was usually better on the 1/4 mile.
It was the same with Audi people used to go for bigger turbos on the s4 to get bigger hp but then missed the low down grunt and spool up of the smaller turbo.
