Turbo choices for forged engine project

As some of you might know I am in the process of creating a new engine for my C70 ME7 1999 car aka "Betsy".

Anyway just got the S60R manifold sorted & now wondering what turbo to have. Budget is about 1000 pounds. Needs to come in at around 3K rpm.

Currently toying with the idea of a GT28-71R as I don't want something that is too top heavy.

Choice is somewhat baffling - so any tips would be appreciated.

I used to run a GT2871R on my old 200SX, was pushing well over 420bhp, wasnt laggy at all.
Came in very smoothly threw the revs, and was ideal for not trying to break traction.

Once te GT's have beern fitted with a metal caged bearing, they are as strong as a journal turbo, but with faster spool.

I've had mine fitted with a metal cage.

I would consider all of the above as offering great potential.

However, I might also suggest getting your 19t looked at by the likes of Owen Developments. Porting, larger compressor and clipped turbine plus easy bolt on. You would need a robust actuator. This is effectively what I'm doing on a stock bottom end but I would feel more comfortable with forged rods. Bear in mind that you should see 370bhp and 390lbs from a 19t with appropriate supporting mods and mapping. You will get more from the Garrett options but with higher initial purchase, fitting and mapping costs. Just a thought as I know my car feels very different from when I just bolted the 19t on and ran the standard MTE 19t map.
