LEAST EXPENSIVE TIP OF THE DAY
I've had a problem with my 850R Estate's air con not remaining cold. A couple of visits to various Volvo 'specialists' met with the same response:- ''Its the evaporator - massive job, loads of money!''
Needless to say I was not impressed particularly as I understand the 850's evaporator is prone to failure. However, undeterred I re-gased the system with a mobile chap I found locally and lo' and behold with the use of a 'sniffer' and a bit of poking around we found the valve where you re-gas was ever so slightly leaking. A new value for 'tuppence' re-gas and no problems since!Before you get 'suckered' to spend £1500+ changing the evaporator (assuming you can find someone to do it) get a through examination of all the joints and valve!

Glad you highlighted this common problem.

I'm an air con engineer and from my experience hardly any garages and main dealers know about or fully understand a/c. They often guess and hope their right...at the customers expense!

And I would suggest no one out there buys the top up gas from Halfords for £40. If its leaked out it needs vacuum pumping after the leak is repaired and then re gassing which Halfords gadget can't do.
Its illegal to add gas to a system if you know it has a leak!!
Gas lasts forever! it only needs replacing if its contaminated or leaked out.
If in doubt ask.
