That could be the problem, the plug was to long and the piston hit it at the top of the stroke. Depending on how bad the damage is to the piston and bore, it could be all you need to do is take the head off, check the top of the piston for damage, it sounds as if you have some, drop the piston to the bottom of the stroke and see if there is damage to the bore. If not then get a new piston and a set of rings, drop the sump and do the business.
You could also go to the people who supplied you with the incorrect plug and demand that they fix the problem as they supplied you with the wrong goods.
You put the odd one in first so you wouldn't think that the others didn't match as they had been supplied as the correct plugs for the engine.
