A bit of D5 advice needed please

A mate has just popped round asking for help with an issue with his 163bhp V70 D5. I drive it and it's got a big flat spot / hesitation under hard acceleration at around 2200rpm. I've had a brief look round the car and everything looks good at a glance. The bottom of the intercooler is straight and not obviously split but there is a fair bit of oil under there. No smoke on throttle but turbo whistle is a bit louder than mine.

I'm going to clean out his mixer pipe next week. I'll chuck a bottle of injector cleaner through too. Anything else I ought to pay attention to??

Mine was a bit flat and smokey when i picked it up. It'd been ran VERY low on diesel. A few "raggings" later, it seemed better and even better after a service and the fuel filter replacement, so im with Stephen on this one
    Thankyou, Goodnight....much love

Check the turbo inlet pipe which connects to the turbo compressor side. If it's mushy, then it's probably collapsing under load and needs to be replaced.

The old D5 had lots of other niggling problems such as leaking injectors, faulty VNT controllers, faulty turbos, air leaks in the engine mounts, split intercoolers...

If it's the paper type filter in the plastic housing, use the drain at the bottom of the housing & drain the diesel into a clean container (approx 3/4 litre). I used a large pair of water pump pliers to unscrew the plastic filter housing (proper thrutch to get the thing to release). Once you've changed the filter and installed the new rubber seal on the housing, 3/4 fill the housing with the diesel you drained earlier remembering to make sure the drain at the bottom is tight. This will eliminate the need to crank the engine for 30-60 secs for it to fill the housing and start the car.

I've txt him and he had the car services 7000 miles ago when he bought it and the fuel filter was changed then so surely that's still well within its useful life??
