V70 T5 2001 Turning Over But Not Starting

    Morning all.

Just looking for some guidance / suggestions or advice from the forum.

Went to drive to work this morning and my V70 T5 P2 won't start - it's got a healthy charge, cranks strongly and everything electrical seems to be working OK. This has never happened before and I'm a bit confused (and a bit worried... I love the car and I'm hoping it's nothing major).

Just wondered if any of you guys have experienced this or whether it's a common fault that can be routed to something specific (I'm aware from spending time on these forums that there are certain things like ETM and 3 way cat failures that can are 'known' issues)?

SO... has anyone experienced something similar and what were the causes of the problem?

Obviously, the car is going to have to be taken to a garage by Green Flag, but it would be good to have an idea of where the fault might be rather than wait for the garage to either work it out or 'eliminate' possible issues at my cost!

NB - my independent have been trying to solve an intermittent problem with slightly rough running in the mid-range (the car feels like it's driving into a strong headwind / has significant flat spots and feels, well, 'fluffy'... that's the only way I can describe it... like a mis-fire, but not a pronounced one. Emissions light has been on checked and cleared a few times and every time the guys tell me that it's a cat failure. However, the car still drives OK and I've been saving up for a better downpipe and cat back system. Basically in the process the garage and I have been 'working through' possible issues, so I've had a new MAF, new plugs etc.

I'd be grateful for any advice or similar experiences so that I know what I'm in for!

    Cheers

    Hi

Don't take this personally but disregarding everything you've said so far about your mechanic etc (sounds like he's not sure what or how to diagnose correctly), anyway, you gotta start with the basics, Just like any non-start on any petrol vehicle that is MPFi.

    Checks:
Battery voltage above 12.2v (ideally 12.5v) - (connect to doner vehicle/boost pack/battery charger for 12hours to elliminate YOUR battery.
Have you got 12v at the injectors? Ignition ON.
Have you got a good 'switching' signal at injectors? Ignition CRANKING.
Have you got 12v at the fuel pump fuse? Ignition ON.
On crank, do you have between 4-6amps across fuel pump fuse? Ignition ON and CRANK.
Fuel in tank? (is is correct fuel??) Trust me, there's hundred's every day put in wrong fuel!
With MAF connected, do you have 12v AND 5v present on the MAF multiplug (ignition on)? This proves ECU is powered up and working.

If you have ALL of the above then my friend, unless your car is flooded with fuel or Borewashed, she should start!!

A faulty MAF is very unlikely to prevent the car from starting. You can of course, disconnect the MAF and the car will bypass it and still start. If your machanic has fitted a new MAF and plugs then trust me, he's clutching at straws big time! How much more of YOUR money is he going to waste??

A faulty ETM will however prevent your car from starting and can also cause cutting out. If it is the ETM, then the Dealer will need to install software to the car else a new one won't work.

Catalyst failure is only really likely if Oxygen sensor (Bank 2) is shown as fault when EML is on. Volvo catalyst's last forever so unless your car has done 150K+, i doubt very much that the Catalytic convertor is at fault.

I think you should tell your Indy to STOP working on your vehicle and have it taken to a Volvo specialist elsewhere. Otherwise i doubt very much that you'll ever get to the bottom of it.

Non start's are almost impossible to diagnose in a forum. There's a hundred and one possibilitys and this isn't really the place to try and sort your problem.

If you want to pursue this thread then by all means check the above CHECKS and report back then this will go along way into 'maybe' finding the root cause.

    Lee.

    ps.
