Have a look to see if the brake fluid has gone down and look under the car where the bell housing meets the engine to see if fluid is leaking if so your internal slave cylunder is shoot

have a look at the bell housing in the morning see if there is any fluid leaking out on to the floor/under tray,
is your clutch fluid level low? at least you know..sorry to say.

As you`ve got to remove the gearbox to change the slave it mite be an idea to change the clutch and dual mass flywheel

I have to agree with oblark, if you have readies it's worth up rating your clutch and flywheel. You then know she's going to last for a long time. And you don't have to take it apart again.

The 850 has a single mass flywheel and all V70`s have a dual mass flywheel

I had it happen in an E30 BMW years ago - good thing was it happened outside my house before I pulled away. That was the slave cylinder. The clutch went shortly after (and after I sold it I'm pleased to say).

Normally if you have a external slave then it's single mass and internal normally dual mass and I had a 2.5lpt v70 1998 and that had a single mass

Forget the year as according to the way Volvo dictate a 1997 model is known as a 1998 model so a `98 model is really `99 and so on for all models not just V70`s. Mine is Registered January `97 but it is a `96 model BUT V70`s started only in `97 Volvo confuse it all. If you want to call it Dual Mass Flywheel then by all means do, but Volvo call them 2-Part Flywheels (same but different) They were introduced (not fitted to all!) in week 20 of 1997 so that is the earliest time you should find one fitted! But it all revolves around the engine number 1053512- = 2-Part Flywheel with the Internal Slave Cylinder. The part number for the 2.0litre should be 9480660. Only the N/A 2.0FS appears to not have a 2-part flywheel.

The reason you cannot find the flywheels is because you are looking in the wrong section, they are nothing to do with clutches as it is not a clutch. You will see two clutches listed but these are self adjusting or NOT self adjusting types.

The flywheels come under Crank Mechanisms as they are part of the engine assembly.

    Although confusing, this may help?

After 5 hrs tonight the car is done. The slave cyclinder was knackered, stuck down and bearings gone. Not a nice job but happy its back on the road.
