    Noob Fault codes help?

(this may get long winded but bare with me)

New to the forums this morning after y2blades recommendation to join and ask some questions regarding some faults with my S60. (y2b i'm Pixel-Snapper on PH's)

I've had the car since the end of Feb this year. Not long after that I got an emissions light, took it into my mechanicals (non specialist) to get them to plug it in and see what the problem was. Their using a standard code reader that came up with a faulty E-vap valve. I left off getting it done but it went in last Friday for them to look at again. As before the E-vap code came up so they ordered a new one. This took us to Wednesday, it went back in to be fitted and I thought that would be the end of it. Went to get it after work and they had cleared the E-vap problem but the emissions light was still on though this time they couldn't read any codes on their machine. Luckily, Sheffield & Meredith specialist volvo garage is just round the corner and mates with my mechanics. Dropped it on their proper volvo diagnostic reader and came up with these:

    ECM-6440?
ECM-4000 - Canister purge signal to low
ECM-644 - Camshaft control faulty signal
ECM-6800 - turbo control valve signal to low

It then spent the next 2days with my mechanic trying to ascertain the problem to no avail.

Does this mean anything to anyone? have you had similar codes come up?

    Thanks in advance.

    Matt.

Ow BTW heres a pic of the troublesome beast.

I do love her really though.

Sounds like a problem JamesT5 had breifly, after fiddling with his etm. He had the evap-purge code and the emissions light and it turned out to be one of the electrical connections between the engine and radiator playing up (in his case, he forgot to plug it back in) It'll be worth unplugging and reconnecting all the plugs around there (the evap purge is under the inlet manifold) incase there's a dodgy connection.

    Hope this helps.

Cheers Martin, I think the evap purge is the value that they replaced. Little black thing with a couple of pipes that comes of it and have some to do with fuel vacuum.

Also meant to mention that they found that there was no current coming from the connector on the VVT actuator that sits onto of the rocker cover which is possibly linked to the ECM-644 code?

And that the plug for the tubro control unit was only reading just over 3amps, I would have thought that this should read atleast 6-12amps?

If you need an independent Volvo specialist locally then Tim Williams is in Coalville - I wouldn't have my car on the road without him. There aren't many replies on this thread (and I don't have enough knowledge to contribute either) so make use of T5D5/VOC forums - lots of P2 owners who may be able to advise. I'm a member on all of them and it helps to expose difficult issues to a wider audience.

Thanks Jardon I will bear him in mind... I've researched a few things I need to try out this weekend myself.

Will sign up to VOC as well then.

    Cheers.

    Good find mate

I've not noticed a "dump valve" sound but then I rarely have the windows open while driving.
I'm going to clean mine anyway, with over 158k on the clock I'm sure it will need it.

    Cheers.

Had a good listen to mine this morning, drove with the windows open all the way to work (brrrrrrrr that wind is chilly).

No sign of a "dump valve noise" here at all tbh but I'm going to clean the thingy anyway...I like little jobs like this.

keep us posted when you do your, want to see if you break any of the fragile lugs/tabs that are mentioned before I do mine.

    Have a good weekend chap.

Well been doing abit more reading and the P2 actually has a closed TCV so there's no way of cleaning it so looks like I'll have to get a new one then. Missed out on one off ebay recently as I refuse to pay the stealer £60 for one.

I have a couple of used P2 TCV's lying around if you want to try a known functioning part. I replace mine ~annually as they are much cheaper from FRF or MRG with forum discount and running higher boost they do wear quicker (higher duty cycle). Send me a PM with your address and I'll get something in the post.

Massive thanks to Jardon for the TCV is made a massive difference to the power of the car, pulling much stronger through the rev range and feels 10x quicker now. I reset the car by taking the negative lead off the battery for 30mins as you said Jandon, started the car and drove over to my girlfriends I noticed that the emissions light had gone off, just got back in the car and the lights come on again so must still have something flagging up.

Well at least one step closer.

Well one step forward, two steps back! Plugged the car into a boost reader yest afternoon amd it seems that the car not running any boost at all! :0(

So my 2.0T is infact just a 2ltr n/a car at the moment.

Read up some more info and next step is to try and clean the CVVT valve thats throwing ECM-644 fault code. I've come to think this is the source of the other codes piggy backing of them.

    Soldier on.

If the car feels quick I'm guessing there is boost. How are you measuring boost?

A chap nearby has a Vida dice diagnostics kit that he kindly let me plug the car into.

It came up with the same codes as before.

ECM-6440 - ECM unit signal to low
ECM-4000 - canister burge valve signal to low
ECM-644a - Camshaft control valve faulty signal
    ECM-6800 - Turbo control Valve

We then plugged it into a Bluetooth OBD unit + a boost reader app that he has on his smartphone. Gunned it up the road in 1st and 2nd to the red line a couple of times and it wasn't reading much something like 0.6bar if anything at all.

I have found is that the CVVT unit can become clogged causing the ECM-644 as seen here:
    http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s...-signal-57327/

Also found a copy and paste explanation from Vardis in the second post.
    http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/showthre...VVT-fault-code!

Going to strip the CVVT unit down tonight and see if its caked up.

A stock 2.3 T5 runs 0.7 bar (10.5psi) boost so the 0.6 bar you are seeing sounds reasonable. Out of my depth on the rest though.
