    S60R loud knocking sound!

On the way home from work lastnite the car devoleped a loud knocking sound which only happens when driving at a steady speed when accelerating or braking it goes away, it sounds as though it's coming from the rear but could be wrong, had a small look lastnite but couldn't find anything,

Any one had anything like this happen or any ideas to the problem would be much appreciated thanks?

I will be hopefully getting it jacked up tonight to try & get to the bottom of the problem!

There's people far more qualified than I am on here to help you but I'll do the best I can....

Is the sound constant and steady or random? If it's random it could be a worn bushing allowing bits of suspension to knock together when you go over a bump. There's also the theory it could be worn shock absorbers or a worn shock absorber. It could also be the heat sheild for the exhaust that's loose and that's hard to see because it's not easily seen unless you're right under the car.

I doubt it's a worn CV joint because I heard that's more of a constant 'clicking sound'.

My money is on a worn suspension bushing but if any more mechanically minded people suggest anything else then all well and good.

If you jack the car up, make sure it's secure and then get a long screwdriver and see if there is any play on the bishings. Also, open the tail gate and then get some pressure on the back end and bounce the back end up and down. If it keeps bouncing for more than 1 - 2 times then you may have a worn shock absorber.

If it doesn't bounce much but still makes the knocking sound, it is likely a worn bushing.

    Anyway, I hope that helps.

    Regards

    James

Thanks for the reply don't think it's bushes as the noise is a constant loud knocking something has went extremely wrong, it's that bad I can't drive as I fear it may do further damage, everyone I drove past yesterday were starring that's how loud it was! Also I could feel the knocking inside the car & was cussing vibrations!

Is the knocking constant, or does it vary with speed, i.e. does it get more rapid the faster you go? Sounds a bit like the rear diff, but I don't believe they're prone to giving up.

It does seem to get faster the faster I go but never been over 25mph, I hope it's not the diff as this will be costly! The car doesent feel rite like something has come loose, And it's strange how the knocking completely disappears under accelarting or breaking! Thanks

I wonder if you've got a broken suspension spring?

I had this a few times (depending on the type of knocking)

    Could be the drop links
When my Angle Gear was on the way out it sounded like that
    Might be the exhaust?

Could it be the exhaust, not loose, but flexing under acceleration and braking pulling it away from whatever it's hitting due to a worn engine mount, then at steady speed wen the engine isn't under load the exhaust is returning to te position where it's hitting something?

Thanks for the reply's & I will check all of the above,

To describe the noise its like someone tapping a brake disc with a hammer,

    It really is that loud!

This is a totally random one but worth a look...

About a year ago I was at home washing my car when I got a call from my worried sounding Dad in his P1 V70 R AWD with a loud knock occurring. He brought it round and took me for a drive and it sound terrible and I was convinced his transfer box was going to spit itself across the road. Got it recovered to RT that evening expecting the worst. Next day got a call to say when it went on the ramp it was found the NSF wheel was totally loose and clonking on the hub at steady speed but hushing on throttle or brake. We assume someone had a crack at nicking his Nebulas but got spooked.

Looong shot but worth a look!!

If it is in time with wheel rotation then it may be delaminated handbrake shoes or pads.
    Thx

The awd only works up 25 mph after that i think it works at 5% drive to rear wheels i think, have a drive with the hand brake light on this will turn off the awd system see what happens .
The rear handbrake shoes can cause this type of noise if the linings have can away might be worth a look jack up rear wheel and give at a spin, the shoes can get ripped out from there mounts which will cause a lot of damage.

Thanks for the replies it's going to be the handbrake I just know it!

The night before the knock started the handbrake was making a noise when driving the car & if I pulled the handbrake lever up a little the noise would go away!

Bet I have destroyed my hubs now : (

Your hubs should be fine, it'll probably just be the linings rattling around.

....which means, get them inspected NOW or you could incur big bills.

I don't know if Volvo ones are prone to failing, normally the only reason for shoes failing is they've got really worn, and broken up, or they've been oil contaminated.
