Ive checked all the plug leads etc and all seems ok.... the plugs will need doing soon but still in good shape, there was no oil in the plug holes but there was oil sitting in the top of the rocker cover, however i cannot find where it has come from :s

Have you taken each lead and plug out one by one. Have someone hold the ht lead and touch the spark plug on a ground, turn the engine over to see if you def getting a spark ?

I did check all the plugs, i was thinking there would b a crack in one... but wasn't, they are all good and also the leads. its does all look a bit old and i shall replace in the future but it looks ok for now
I don't think checking each spark will really help as the problem is very intermittent... doesn't happen on every short drive

im at 156k with this and i dont think its been serviced too well, the internals sounds sweet even on cold..... but im sure the tensioners are noisy, can hear some rattles when reved... sounds like bearings.
I would redo the breathers myself, i was thinking of repiping it with some tube ive got and use a catch tank, as the whole system seems tired and leaky... also it does smoke a little.
i was wondering if anyone had done a similar job before as i was wondering what to do with the fire box (not that ive even looked at it on a volvo before)
