Interesting, however, there's a few factors they may not have considered...
The car had a new clutch at 50k but there's nothing on the plod service sheet about the DMF and she's now at 190k. The car was a motorway traffic car that was worked hard (blew it's exhaust manifold gasket when it was 3 years old)
I'll try to get a video/audio of the dmf chirping away oh and if the chirping isn't enough, there's the shuddering.
I'm not doubting the abilities of your guys Shane, I recon they probably haven't seen one like mine

When Tim took my DMF out he said it was 80-90% through it's life at 57k miles.

It's worth changing the rear main oil seal when doing the slave too.

That was my thoughts when I had mine done last July/August....I bit the bullet and got it done by my trusted local independent...it has been faultless (touch-wood) ever since

I've read enough stories about cars stuck on drives with guts hanging out when a part doesn't fit or another part is found to be needed halfway through a job.

I got the slave for 90 quid, genuine LUK one too.

Recon I should do the rms? I hear horror stories about the new ine not being fitted properly and, well, we all know the rest

Mine is fine and I'm inclined to leave it well alone lol.

That`s the reason i bought my pre ME7 V70 , no ETM or DMS or Internal Slave or VVT.

My 2001 S40 1.8 with DMS drives or sounds no different when using the clutch to my `97 V70

Martin are you sure the chirping is the DMS and not the clutch thrust bearing?

I get an odd chirp when letting up the clutch very very slow, which is my release bearing.

Before you just strip it down for replacement the clutch pedal will pulse and also some vibration as the DMF material gets flung off around the bellhousing and causes imbalance. To confirm it is the DMS when the starter motor is removed you will see all that material around where the pinion on the starter is and it can jam it.

I've been toying with this possibility for a while. Until I get a video, I'm gonna try to describe it...

When you pull from a rolling start, in the wrong gear you get a shudder, you get it in most cars, it's the car's way of telling you to cog it down a gear. With each pulse of that shudder, I get a chirp (a lot like that of a pied wagtail) which continues until the shudder stops. It's audible with the windows closed and turns heads in the high street lol.

I have to presume the DMF is shot as it's done almost 190k miles, 123k of which were plod abuse.

I'm getting no vibration other than a shudder when I pull away and I think that's what's left of the clutch.

I've read somewhere that although bits of the DMF haven't fallen off, the internal gubbins could be shot anyway.

Martin does the T5 have the little plastic plug/bung in the bellhousing area? that everyone with D5s replace while it is apart for the clutch job.
The OEM plastic ones are known to leak, pop out....all over the nice new clutch and flywheel.

The replacement is a Genuine Volvo part, it is a little metal one and costs nothing (iirc it was literally a few pence)
