    I can't believe the price of a P2 clutch / Flywheel

Just had a quote from a local indy to do my clutch, dmf and slave. I nearly fell off my chair...

    £1200 + VAT fitted

Now I've seen the clutch for about 150, but the DMF is frightning - 370 - 500! WTF?

I really have to do something as my clutch, although not slipping or stinking yet, has done over 130k and the DMF is chirping like a bluetit!

I really don't fancy doing it myself as it looks like a right pig of a job.

    Am I missing something?

LOL. Martin, that quote sounds good to me mate. If you want your car to drive nice and not let you doen then don't scrimp on parts. Use OE or LUK parts. A DMF for my car is £600. Clutch is £180 and then theres the labour.

Personally i wouldn't do it myself, leave it to the experts.

bin it & go SMF, you can even get a TTV lightened flywheel & still be cheaper than your DMF

i know, but the benefits are night and day. Clutch pedal will be lighter, biting point will be closer to the carpet, car will feel smoother, pull harder (if yours is slipping - at all?) and will good for another 120k!!!!

The job should also include brake fluid change as the clutch fluid is part of the same reservoir.

It isn't slipping at all but with 130+k on it, and going by the noises coming from the dmf, I think I should be prepared for the worst!

Single mass sounds like a good idea but I don't want any harshness from the engine.
    I like comfy lol.

Do it yourself. I am about to do mine fairly soon and im considering lifting the engine out. Subframe will need to be dropped to get the box out and my theory is if i lift engine allows me to do all mounts at the same time.

Nothing is exactly hard, just time consuming hence high labour charge for clutch and dmf change

£1200 from an Indy garage? Imagine what a Main Stealer would charge! My clutch bite seems relatively high but not sure if it warrants changing it yet.

How does the smf feel in comparison to the dmf? Is it harsher?

Thats cheap for a DMF, my dads was replaced back in 2001 at the main dealer as the owner had cooked the clutch, price on the receipt is £800 just for the DMF!

I'll definitely be looking at going the SMF route when the R's clutch needs doing. I don't know about harshness Martin, but our clutch is fairly sudden anyway.

There is more transmission NVH with an SMF. I have a Kalmar Union lightened flywheel and sprung CG motorsport clutch disc - there is gear rattle at idle but that's not audible in the car. When driving I hear more gearbox noise under load but I wouldn't call it loud. It is difficult to say how much of the noise I hear is due to the solid front subframe mount and solid O/S engine mount - I think it would be quieter with stock mounts as less vibration would reach the cabin. Try before you buy would be best I guess.

It's a little nosier than a DMF and when coming off the accelerator at low revs in a low gear it's not that smooth. Other than that, it's good.
