Why do you need to replace your tappets?

Surely they just need adjusting, assuming they're not hydraulic.

No he's said they will all need replacing, he's going to quote me, but said it might be worth me getting the parts (if I can get them cheaper) & he will fit

185 I thought I'd read somewhere that they are hydraulic. When I was at Charlwood Volvo getting my exhaust done the guy was telling me about his D5 that had recently been rica remapped to well over 200hp and he said that he had just had to do all the lifters and his was on similar mileage I think so I'm guessing hers are worn too. I don't know enough about the D5 to know if there's anything else it could be.

I couldn't find anything definitive to cover if they are hydraulic or solid, but I would have thought hydraulic due to the low revving engine.

Good news is that they are almost plug and play.
Shopping list (please add to if I've missed anything)
    Tappets
    Gasket sealant
    Oil return o-ring.
    Cam seals..?
    Camshaft shells
    Cambelt/adjuster(depending on age)

Your car has done relatively low mileage and i would be surprised if your Hydraulic lifters need changing so soon. Before you go shelling out i would run some wynns engine flush through your system first as diesel cars do soot up and carbonise everything, so its just possible that one or two of your lifters are just sticking!
An engine flush and a good grade fully synthetic oil may unstick them and have them running sweet again.

replacing your lifters seems abit drastic to me, that's all.

She's done 106 k though so shes done a lot of mileage as she's only 5 years. I just don't want to be paying out 2 sets of fees to get it done.

That's not that high. Mine has done 123k and my lifters are not noisy. Are you sure your mech' is not confusing the noise with the injector solenoids? They tick and can be loud on sone cars. Yours is a common rail diesel and therefore has electronic injectors. I spoke with Steve about this this afternoon when he popped round for a coffee on his way home. Seriously, you gotta try the engine flush and pucker engine oil first before you shell out. You won't be wasteing any money cos the new oil will stay in your engine, despite the work being done. Could save you a fortune! Lifters are about £10 - 15 each and their are 20 of them. If it doesn't work then nothing ventured fresh oil gained!

Hi I would pop into halfords or the like as they do the wynns flush for the hydraulics cams re noise less than a tenner it worth a go,leave it in for a couple of weeks then drop the oil then put some good quality in.
