Drove a remapped D5 this evening...

    ...f¥€k my old boots!!!

A friend has just picked up a 2002 S60 D5 with 187,000 miles on it for £1100! It's by no means mint but still a bargain I think!! Anyway, he's never been in mine (a standard '04 S60 D5) or any other D5 but suspected it was faster than it should be so asked to meet up to do a little comparison. Straight away it was obvious the exhaust wasn't standard and hearing it driving it sounded (can't believe I'm going to say this about a derv) AMAZING!!

Anyway, he asked me to drive his, before taking him out in mine. I pulled out the car park gently, changed to 2nd and applied about 3/4 throttle! My reaction was priceless!! It took off like a scalded cat, the difference between mine and his was night and day!!! His clutch was slipping badly in 3rd so couldn't really go much further on hard throttle but there's no doubt about it...it's an animal!!

I'm guessing at it being a RICA Sport Tune map on there and although I really shouldn't, I'm very tempted to get mine done at some point!!

    Opinions!?

This makes interesting reading for me particularly... my clutch is slipping so once the clutch is done ill be looking into a map too.

Would be very interesting to see pictures/videos and or a dyno chart that for certain.
Arguing is pointless....she may not be right but she's never wrong

Tell her a remap is just having your satnav updated.....

You driven a T5? or a mapped T5 for that matter?
Any hoo, the torque from a remapped D5 is superb and if you can afford it, do it. If you can behave yourself, it'll be more effieient too

    Happy days

Having run around Oulton Park in a tuned D5 - they certainly have the acceleration if not the RPM.

Had a remapped C70 T5 and and S70R with a bleed valve and both were impressive but jumping from a standard car straight into the mapped (higher mileage, worn version), the difference was massive. I remember getting my C70 back after a RICA map and liking it but feeling a little disappointed at the same time. The torque from this D5 was stupid. Rips you into your seat well and truly. Seemed to pull hard right up the revs too without running out of puff. It's definitely made me SERIOUSLY consider it. Total transformation.

I'd be interested to try a D5 with the standard RICA map as a comparison. It may be a little less harsh in the clutch and wouldn't require an exhaust upgrade.

A old T5 with a fitted airleak isn't going to set the world on fire. Even the standard D5 tune will out perform that in the torque stakes.

Nope, agreed! I didn't fit the 'air leak' on the R, I bought it like that. Still dyno'd at 287 bhp though. Very Heath Robinson however.

to 100 mph side by side you will not see any difference between the 2. I'll bet you my lunch there will be nothing in the peak torque figs.

I would always recommend an aftermarket exhaust, especially a custome made exhaust. WIth a remap or even without you get better flow, better sound and a very slight improvement in performance. If you remap and don't replace the exhaust then your never going to get the full 100% out the car that the remap can release.

Will the standard 195bhp remap kill the intercooler? or is this map more sympathetic and doesn't run crazy pressures?

I'm seriously looking at getting my EuroIII D5 remapped but don't want to be fitting new IC's every 18 months......don't want to spend £700 on a custom IC either.

The Rica sports tune (253hp) was only available for the Euro4 Manual (185hp) D5's (180 S40/V50/C30)

The stage 2 on the Euro3 is a 210hp tune.

Yes, this does help. I thought they were 'standard' and 'sports' tunes. So the E3 is just referred to as a 'stage 2'

Any ideas on cost of a stage 2 and and exhaust system? Do you need a sports cat too??

    The stage 2 (210hp) on the euro3 D5 is £495.

Exhaust can cost anywhere from £250 for a cat back. Depends on where you get one from.

The diesels with a nice exhaust sound like someting out of space.....

We did an exhaust on 535d that we remapped and it sounded like a plane taking off.!

Dammit, I hate threads like this! I love the torque and the sound of my Euro III D5 as standard, and threads like this make me really consider getting a remap and exhaust. Only problem is my D5 is on 196K miles now.

Am I right in saying at this age it may not be the best idea? I'm guessing it will go something like:

    £250 Cat back exhaust
    £500 Remap

    $$Priceless Fun$$

    £1500 DMF & Clutch
    £300 Intercooler
    £500 Turbo
    £???? Short engine???

The car I drove had 187,000 miles on it!! Clutch was slipping but DMF was fine!! That clutch was fitted at 103,000 so didn't do bad. (Though he doesn't know when the map was put on!)

But yes, after driving it and hearing the thing from outside (still nice and quiet in the car) I WANT!

Soundwise internally what was it like, I love the noise when giving it the beans but droning gets on my dids.

With a petrol you have less gear changes (like 3rd will run from fruity accelerating at 30-40 mph to 100 in mine.

Diesels often keen up till they need to change gear, go off the boost and you're gone but you can't fault their solid in gear performance.
