    Another mixer pipe de-coked...jeez!!

After reading somewhere on here about how so many people have de-coked the 90` 'mixer elbow' on their D5 engines I thought I'd have a peek this morning and was pretty shocked at the build up. It wasn't as bad as some of the photos I've seen on here, but the small EGR hole at the side was almost closed over!! I cleaned the metal mixer, the two rubber hoses either side of it, the EGR plenum opening and the opening of the inlet manifold. Took a few before and after photos I thought I'd share.

    Before:

    After:

This is a dead easy job but VERY messy. Make sure you double glove and have a full tin of carb cleaner and a full roll of paper at the ready!!

Been for a brief road test and the car definitely pulls a bit harder but much more cleanly right through the rev range. Others have reported a good increase in economy too though it's a bit early for me to know that yet! Either way though, that much crud in your intake tract can't be good and for ease of the job, it's worth doing all day long!!

Although blanking the EGR would prevent the carbon from rebuilding, I'm not sure what the side effects of blanking it might be!? The idea of EGR is SUPPOSEDLY a cleaner more complete burn of the fuel. Sounds a bit backward to me but meh!!

Also, I very much doubt that's ever been done during the 76,000 miles the car has covered in its life. It's not going to build up like that again anytime soon, so a clean through perhaps once a year would easily keep on top of things.

It's the silver 90 degree pipe just in front and low of the engine cover and to the left of the airbox. One 10mm bolt holding a wiring harness to the front of it, 3 10mm bolts holding the elbow on and the jubilee clips holding the rubber pipes each end. Good idea to clean both the mating faces up as well and take the metal gasket off and clean it up too. That just clips on the the engine side.

By the way, my car is 2004 with 76,000 miles. Most of these cars are much higher mileage so you can guess how they must look! Of course, if they're driven like Miss Daisey ALL the time they'll be bad and equally if they're run on crap fuel they'll be bad! I've only just bought mine so it will get the occasional blast to clear it through and I'll be running it on V Power deisel which is FAR cleaner than the regular super market rubbish.

Thanks bud, but it's not that mint yet! I've cleaned the engine bay as the oil filler seal had gone when I bought it and there was oil everywhere! Also cleaned the inside as it was pretty vile, but I need to wait for a dry weekend to detail the exterior! Looks like I'm going to have a long wait!! Ha ha.

No worries! All D5 owners should do this IMO if they've not already.

I've just done mine, it was quite thick with oily residue but definitely not as bad as the 2 pictured above. I took the car for a quick spin but it was only into town and back so didn't really get the chance to open the taps properly, but it didn't fell any different tbh! It can only be a good thing that its now clean and I'm glad I checked it so it wasn't a complete waste of time.
I would guess that if your car never goes out of town much and never really gets taken on long journeys or accelerates hard it would be worse than a car that gets used properly.

Previously I've noticed that when I've only been pottering around town or had cruise on the motorway for a while, the next time I accelerate hard a black smog comes out of the exhaust briefly. My guess would be that its crud from inside the EGR building up and then getting flushed through as you boot it, would that be a fair assumption?
