    Auto box................ HELP!!! 1999 V70R

Hi all, so I took the car and flushed and changed the auto box fluid with Volvo stuff, now I have no 3rd gear!!!
It's really smooth going from 1st to 2nd, but there's no third at all.
All that was done was a flush, what the hell could have happened??
Is there likely to be an easy fix?
Mine is the 5 speed auto.

Not many people who have experience with your auto. Are you sure you used the fluid for the 5spd and not the 4spd?

Double check the correct fluid was used and also check the level of the fluid

Also after you changed the fluid, before driving did you select all the gears a few times with the car stationary 1st?

As this gets the whole system bled up correctly, then check the level, drive easy for 10 - 15 mins check and add if req any of the correct fluid.

Yep, did all that. The fluid is Volvo stuff for the 5 speed box. I have run the car stationary, had the car on a ramp and gone through the gears too. Occasionally it seemed as if the car hit fourth when it was on the ramp when it was coming back down the revs, but not all the time.

    Unhappy

Trouble is doing a auto fluid change is always a cross fingers job, It can disturb alot of rubbish floating about in the box, But if you dont change the fluid obviously it will also lead to damage.

What colour was the old fluid when it came out?

Chances are that the car had may have had a issue before you bought it i'd expect.

Automatics are a very complex bit of kit so when they do go wrong it can be difficult to fix them. Not many places specialise in them and even places that do, only seem to do certain boxs.

    unfortunatly.

    Post auto gear box

Hi just looking at your problem is the auto box the same as the ones fitted to the 2003 on s60s ,As there is a large nut shaped fitting at the top of the box which which looks like a oil filler but if this is removed you will lose 3rd gear as this fitting holds the drive band for 3rd gear.
Did a workshop change the oil for you ?,just ask them where the put the oil in it.

you google this problem there is a way to repair the box with out a full rebuild.

This is my first reply on this site hope this might help.

I've read about that problem on the XC forums - http://volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15297

No idea if it's the same box (or similar).

Harvey, you may just be a genius!
That is exactly where the garage filled the gearbox!
That would explain everything. They're looking into it now. Thanks for the info!

    All is well in Volvoland!!!

Harvey, you were bang on the money!
Spoke to my mechie this morning and he's fixed it!!
Apparently he took out the B4 servo and some 'things', performed a bit of jiggery-pokery and contortionism, and got it all hooked back up! I haven't driven it, and I'm away for a fortnight so I can't but he assures me he's been up and down the gears on a run and it's silky smooth! Happy days!!

I wonder how many working boxes and cars have been scrapped because of this????

We'll need to get a special floodlight with a Harvey symbol on it to call him, just in case he isn't online!
