Question Suspension 'ping/clonk' NOT ARB links.

Hello folks, looking for a bit of advice - ill try to explain as succinctly as possible without going on forever!

    Car:

    2001 V70 T5 (p2). 152k miles.

    Problem:

An occasional LOUD noise from the suspension - sometimes it sounds like its something under stress being released, sometimes just a big old clunk. Can happen when articulating the suspension, i.e. over a speed bump, rough surface, or change in road surface.

Angle of steering makes no difference as far as I can tell. Best guess says coming from left side, but not 100% sure.

    Diagnosis thus far:

Had car on ramps at my local garage. Not a Volvo specialist but works on them often enough (5 of them for sale on his forecourt). Its definitely NOT the ARB droplinks, we ordered these in thinking they would be the problem but they arent :S

Nothing else on the front suspension looks to be amiss, all tight and in serviceable condition.

Apparently top mounts were replaced by previous owner 2yrs / 10k miles ago but I have no proof.

Any ideas?....... Something, obviously, is not quite right - yet nothing appears wrong when under the car.

    :S

    Ta!

Exactly the same problem on my P2 S60, ive had everything checked over on 3 occassions now and they cant find anything wrong at all. It sounds a bit like a spring dislocation / relocation, but there is no sign of that on the spring.

Ive had this problem for about 6 months now. It was checked out by a very reputable Volvo indy.

If you find out what it is please let me know, and I will do the same for you. Mine is also sounding like its from the nearside ( passenger side ) front of the car.

    Cheers, will do!

The mechanic did say it could be spring location / re-location, but I want sure if that's what he truly meant as my Dutch isnt brilliant!

Im happy just to drive it too - everything seems solid enough and servicable - its just an 'angry' sound when it happens!

Well, perhaps my fears are allayed a little then

Typically I couldnt produce the sound on a 15 minute test drive with the mechanic.

Have a look at the exhaust mount under the cabin (not sure where, cos I haven't done it myself but previous owner had it come up on an mot) apparently, one of the mounts can crack, causing the exhaust to bang against the underside of the car, giving the sound of a big suspension knock.
    Worth a look.

    ,.,

there is an issue with the p2 suspension making noises,
apparently the spring makes noises/moves on the lower platform which it sits on,
volvo do a repair kit type thing for it which is 2 rubber cusions for the spring to sit on,
i havnt got the part numbers to hand but il try and find them,
maybe if you call your local dealer and enquire about this noise/issue and see what they say, maybe they will tell you more.

Same boat here. I have recent ARB links, very recent shocks and top mounts. It does sound quite dramatic. I look forward to some infor on these cushions.

Would these be relevant? I'm a bit loathed to strip my front struts again so soon after they were done. Would it be too much of a bodge to cut a slot and fit around the strut in-situ?

Hmm, mine are open-ended and slide up the first 4 or 5 inches of the spring.

just had a similar thing on my 850 estate that i just sold i tried everything i took the whole suspension out and found nothing, i had my top mounts replaced just before aswell, it turned out to be the plastic/ rubber at the top rubbing against something it made really loud clunk on rough roads and speed bumps.

any way the solution was to open the bonnet and srap silicon lube on the top mount, the noise went and never came back. youll need to spray alot. try and let me know how it works.
