it wasn't actually done by Volvo, Volvo commissioned the design company (can't remember who it was. Pinnfarini, Bertone etc) to design & get the roof working. Volvo's plans were then to take the jigs/panels & make it themselves, but the design company were expecting to be contracted to make all the production cars so wouldn't hand anything over. The delay tactics obviously worked & Volvo missed the boat with it
