I guess when people get fed up with playing with old 850s a V50 T5 AWD with Focus RS engine could be the way to go! Still it wont look as good as a polestar C30 but it could surprise a few folk in the same way an 850 T5 did 10-15 years ago!

I don't now? Now my 854 T5 R has been rebuilt and tuned it is proper quick and still has the potential to upset a lot of modern cars! I have seen of focus RS's off the new ones! and can pull away from M3's the last ones not the V8's both of them where already moving not from a standing start

So still quite iconic I think! I never did figure out why some of the 7 series where not so popular especially as they where RWD!

As for the Polestar Car I am not that impressed!

Yours must be along with a few others that I can probably count on one hand are an exception to the rule most T5s and Rs that I have seen and driven arnt that specical anymore and to be honest 6 cylinder M3s arnt that quick on a rolling start I beat up a Z3 M roadster in my V70 P1 a few years ago!
All respect due to your car but it obviously bears little mechanical relation to the 240 BHP T5R that left the factory 15 years ago yours is obviously a whole lot better in terms of power.
Back then 200 BHP or more was a lot in any family car but today the game has moved on and I hardly think an 850 can be iconic for looks alone and it wasnt quite a lotus carlton performance but it did certainly move the game up and bring impresive performance to the masses more than the Sierra cosworth did in many ways.

Looks wise for me the P1800 wins with the C30 polestar coming very close I just wish they would make stuff like that go into production

Volvo havent exactly kept up the pace with the bhp race, your V50 T5 would have only had 220 bhp std. It wasnt until 2008 that they gave them a massive 10 bhp more, this is the case with the P2 C70 anyway so the V50 should be the same, god the P1 C70 had more power than the P2.

Ive got a few car books and in the volvo sections it usually mentions the P1800 and the 850 T5s, the T5 changed Volvos image over nite

+1 for the 480. Seriously oddball.

Who thinks that the Polestar C30 will turn out to be the equivalent of a warm R-Design, ie disappointing?

Definately a nice car, I'd probably go for a grey one

Oh and that particular car pictured passed through the hands of the same person that a certain 850 did

No I havent either but its quicker on most road than all my T5s bar one (Miss Whiplash)! To be honest if it wasnt for a drunk driver last year writing my 337 BHP & 510NM Audi S4 last year I wouldnt be back in a Volvo! Ive also owned a Jag XJR v8 superchaged so Im no stanger to power but I rarely use what I have these days.

However in my V50 defence it is lighter more aerodynamic than a stock 850 T5 so although the book speed is the same 149 MPH the 0-60 is 1/2 second quicker as standard 6.9 V 7.4 plus its much more economical. Handles and stops better as standard. My V50 now is mildly tuned and kicking out 230 WHP and 420 NM has basically the same lump focus ST KKK turbo and starts devloping power a lot lower down than the older T5 engines. In reality the BHP per ton as standard is about the same as a bigger 260 BHP T5 so not far off the later S60/ V70s T5s on the road in the real world. (Also I will be getting closer to the magic 300 BHP mark shortly so maybe not that much interms of power but not to shabbey either)

(The P2 C70 are quite heavy due to the heavy metal folding roof so power aside they are slower)

What I was trying to illustrate is to me the C30 Polestar which is AWD and 400 BHP version of the Focus RS engine is more iconic to me & quicker than an RS3 or any hot hatch I know of! THATS MY ICONIC VOLVO. (Not to be confused with just an R design wrapper and software tweeks the pale blue one as seen in the press last year!)
There are few 850 T5r quicker than a tuned RS4 for instance. The Lotus carlton was a quicker family car and arived earlier. Its a shame they have only built one Polestar and maybe someone on here might try and build something similar the easiest solution being a Focus RS engine and an AWD V50 which mine isnt although this wouldnt be an icon it could be an intresting way to go for someone fancying a change from playing with old 850 o 70 series cars!

I have spoken to the Polestar guys and they tell the car would never go in to production!
As it such an expensive car to build the brakes alone cost over 20K!
When we looked at it and sat in it and had the bonnet up, it is as you say the focus lump with a KKK26 Turbo but there was signs of something like where a water injection pipe had been fitted, maybe running Methanol,
None of the switches in the car worked except for the indicators and lights so there was not massive amounts of wire running around the car!
And in the boot there was big steel plates in the spear wheel well for weight balance.
Also later that night when drunk they confessed that it was not 400Bhp and that time it was it was using race fuel and injecting something as well?
On normal pump fuel its closer to 368 Bhp!

But that aside it did look and sound nice!!!!!

I like the polestar c30 but since it will never go into production i very much doubt its going to be iconic. I cant see it being along side the T5 in any future books

All that im saying is volvo havnt kept up theres no way your car standard would give you as much a buzz as a 850 T5 would have when they were first im production, they gave you a kick in the arse and you didnt expect it, the new ones are a wet fish in todays standards the P2 R's should have been the bench mark for your T5.
Dont quote me here 90s Vectra GSI under 200bhp

I had my first 850 T5 11 years ago I bought it as a 1 owner car with just a genuine 100k on the clock and yes it was quick for the time and it was a very good car, but I don't feel anyway short changed by my V50 its lighter more nimble and has more low down grunt and performance is as said before very similar but slightly quicker acceleration in a race a stock 850 v a stock V50 my money would be on the V50 and its miles better on fuel than an 850!. Yes the 850 T5 and R will be an icon and yes 225 BHP back then was more of a deal than 225 BHP but to me the 850 T5 is in banger status give it a few more years and it maybe a classic. I agree with what you saying in terms of power but its not just about power but it would be nice if Volvo had built something a bit more hot V60 R T5 rather than the 4 cylinder turbo and gaytronic 6 cylinder turbo .

i remember my bro buying a MOT'd Mk2 Escort for £50, you try doing that now. Normal T-5 over the yearly will become rare/classic, T-5R's will be iconic if any of them. At the minute there just in the transition period from familes getting rid of them as everyday cars, got to wait & see if they become sought after/collectable
