I had that message come up when my aux belt broke and the alternator was suddenly not being driven. Could be the alternator not charging properly, or some other electrical fault.

That message coupled with the suddenly VERY heavy steering made me think, "you know what, my aux belt has just snapped", half way round a corner.

starting to think the dealer might have a volvo coming back his way soon

Just because the alternator warning light isn't on, doesn't mean it's charging. If your IND circuit is faulty or the Alternator has gone closed circuit, neither will put the light on. Only way to properly check is with a multi meter and the charging system under load, ie lights, heaters on etc. Should read 13.5 - 14.5v
Anything else, or voltage fluctuating usually indicates a faulty battery or regulator faulty.

I had a 57 plate Landrover Disco Saturday night, non start. Once i got her started i found no warning lights on, no alternator output and within 1 minute of started the alternator itself was at around 158 degrees C. With a fire extinguisher at the ready i chucked a new battery on it (vehicle battery was flat, obviuosly) and followed it to a local dealer.

    Always check with a meter.
