    Auto-Box Oil Cooler

    Hi all,

I have recently been searching to no avail to find a "how-to" guide or similar detailing auto-box oil cooler installation.

Does anyone know how and what to do and have access to a pictoral guide?

Also what would those who have done it reccommend as there are many coolers on the market.

    Cheers

Fwiw what ever you end up fitting I'd either fit it with a thermostat or leave the stock cooler inline with the auxiliary cooler as it will help to regulate the fluid temperature as overcooling can cause just as much of a problem as overheating.

Volvo did make an auxiliary auto box cooler, part number (for the whole kit) 9499131. You might be able to find one of those kicking about somewhere.

Dooby had one going spare a while back (after his manual conversion), but I've not seen him on the boards for quite a while.

I used to install them - sadly I have lost the pictures. Check out "how to protect your automatic transmission" on the classified ads parts board.

If you need help them I can guide you. There is a Volvo supplied auxiliary cooler which is why I stopped doing my own version.

I was told that it would be fitted in conjuction with the normal cooler for that reason.

Thanks guys, I guess it all depends on the cost of the Volvo unit compared with that of fitting a stand-alone with a Mocal cooler for instance.

Is it a fairly straight forward installation Dave?

I'm sure i was quoted about £300 for the cooler inc fitting. So doubt the part would be that much from rufe.

The mocal 13 row cooler was about 80 quid. The piperwork I had made up from Pirtek was about 100 quid.

Fitting is relatively easy - you just fit it in the gap in the lower valence. Unfortunately I cannot remember the fittings for the gearbox returns - it might be listed under the previous instructions.

You can secure the mocal using the ends - by drilling through the bottom of the valence. I used to clamp it with some aluminium plate - and tied the top with cable ties to stop it moving about too much.
