    P2 V70 Handbrake.

My P2 has just been parked up for a week without moving, and I've noticed it before with this car and the other P2 that I had. Basically, you get you in the car, release the handbrake, but it's seized on, and will only release by gently setting off. It tends to go with quite a bang, and It does worry me that I'm damaging the car.

Anyone else expeiencing the same please? It's especially bad after a wet spell or after a good wash, so I can only assume that it's 'rusting' up.

my old mans does the same, he has to reverse off our drive but drives forward a bit first to release the brakes. We've not had a look to see whats up yet tho. I find the rolling about a foot after you've put the handbrake on before it locks nerve racking

It's usually that badly seized on, that as you let the clutch out, the car will really drop before it releases.

Exactly! I've seen the look on a couple of drivers faces behind me, when I've applied the handbrake, and then still moved back a bit. Unless I pull the handle up really hard/high, then it does that everytime.

Hehe, I saw one guy shuffling about in a panic, looking for reverse when he stopped too close behind me on a hill and saw me rolling toward him.

The other thing I get occasionally, is I apply the handbrake, think it's taken, and then it suddenly knock's itself off. Scary when it happens if you don't realize straightaway. Could my cable be too tight... I wondered?

P2 handbrake shoes separate and the linings jam the drums, same as on the P1 cars. Clonking when moving off is a warning sign. Change them quick.

And check this thread on VOC...

My P1 shoes disintegrated and locked one wheel up completely... was quite a lot of fun.

Handbrake adjustment is under the handbrake gator if you wanna have a go at adjusting it.
Does sound like the shoes are shot tho.

This is a common attribute with the P2 park brake. They do it because of the way they apply in the drum.

Just because they seize on does not mean they need replacing. Mine were replaced last year, along with the discs and pads and even lubricating the release mech in the drum and spraying grease into the handbrake cable will only ease the application and make it less gritty to apply.

Mine seizes on after two days!! The trick is to make sure your handbrake lever is adjusted correctly...3 - 5 clicks MAX.

You should then only have to pull up about 2 or 3 clicks for the brakes to hold the car solid. If they don't then you should check they have not delaminated which will involve removal of the rear disc assembly.

Only use Genuine shoes on the rear handbrake.
Don't pull the handle up too hard on flat level ground and when released and driving off - pull up gently to remove the surface corrosion from the shoes. This will keep your handbrake working fine.

...and don't use the handbrake for extra cornering .

If yours is anything like my V70 all you need to do is strip them down and clean the whole area to remove the build up of dust, grease and rubbish. I needed to use sandpaper, file, WD40 etc but, once adjusted correctly it'll feel wonderful.

As Al115 and LeeT5 have said, this is a common issue but needs sorting asap to ensure you're not getting delamination of the shoe faces. If one goes and it's kind to you then you then you'll be looking at shoes, drums, springs etc and a struggle getting the seized drum off. If it's not kind it could damage the hub and mounts and then you're in a completely different £££s league.

I replaced mine last April and have noticed them sticking once or twice over the Xmas holidays when the car has been parked up for a couple of days in damp weather. I pull the handbrake on gently at low speed once a week or so in order to keep the surfaces fresh.

...That's precisely what i do. A gentle application at about 40mph is enough. Make sure you use your parkbrake. This will prevent the linkage and cables from seizing.

Just gone out to the p2 which hasn't moved for 10 days, and I've now sussed out that letting the handbrake off, and reappyling several times seems to release it. This has worked on the last 2 occasions that the car has been left parked up for several days.
