Question Breather Pipe - what does it do?

On the 850r there is an air pipe that drops down below the MAF sensor. What does it do?

I assume that it is part of the breather system but I need confirmation.

Working from the air box go past the sensor wiring and then directly below that underneath the pipe there is a blue labelled rubber pipe.

What exactly does it do? And what problems can it cause if it it split/broken etc?

As far as I knew it is to do with the operation of the BCS (boost control solenoid) and should be replaced if the elbow or pipe is split.

So apart from a Lambda light showing a potential MAF sensor problem does it cause running problems?
