2001 AWD - nightmare waiting to happen?

    Hi guys,

im looking at a 2001 XC70 tomorrow which has great service history but im nervous its AWD because of the reputation of the transfer boxes failing and the need to circulate tyres.

If you live with one, or have experience in this area - can you give me a heads up on what to look for or any recommendations etc

    Its petrol with 93k.

    Many thanks!!

Hi Daz, no. It belongs to a client of mine whos moving to Australia for a few years. Been their family run around for around four years - but it is red/burgundy chap.

Whats your opinion on this version of AWD?? I'm starting doubt i'll buy it even though its in great condition with good service history.

if its got FSH and you know the car well, then i cannot see much of a problem, obviously they aint an XC90 but still, i would have one as a daily run about....if that helps

Can't comment specifically on the 2001, although I believe it to be the same system as on my 99? - If it is, don't be put off by the 'stories' of horrendous AWD issues. I've had mine five years and done 45k miles (now on 136k) since I've owned the car I've reconditioned the prop as far as possible (http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/showthread.php?t=21654) at a cost of £60ish and had the transfer box reconditioned by a transmission specialist at 111k miles at a cost of £860. I consider this reasonable for a car which I've owned for 5 years and the fun you can have in the snow makes it all worth while!!

If the history is good, and you don't mind a few quid here and there for the drivability of the AWD it might be worth a punt!

My mates went the other week. Think he managed to pick up a transfer box for about £350 on egay, not sure though could have been more, could have been less.
