    mitchboys custom build

Update, called HLM regarding custom map for my T4 as I'm looking to get my engine and Holset turbo etc etc fitted soon. He said a Holset turbo will not work on a petrol engine as it's designed for a diesel hahaha. Is this guy for for real, there are thousands of people running diesel turbo's on petrol engines to great effect. The Holset truck turbo's are massive on the Jap tuning scene and produce mega power. I don't want this fella anywhere near my car. I explained to him it's even been done on a T4 before, he said he wasn't having it and definitely won't work!! I politely said I didn't want him mapping my car!

funny enough i was talking about the prospect of fitting a giant truck turbo on my 850 recently!! i dont see what the problem is as im sure the turbo just functions the same regardless of fuel use, as shown in your the above videos,it obviously works....and works well!! i reckon its well worth some research and i for one would be very interested in the outcome

    full respray..plenty of body mods..comets..ray cat back noise pipe..decat and wrapped downpipe..me7 exhaust manifold..3" throttle body with ported inlet manifold..blue injectors..adjustable fuel reg..reverse intercooler pipework..19t..open cone air filter..255 fuel pump..m-r-p short shift..boost gauge..unknown remap..adjustable suspension..lightweight crank pulley..n/a cams..stripped out interior..and a heavy right foot

I have gone for a smaller Holset as I want really quick spool. It's about the size of a GT28 but spool is meant to start lower. If I want more power in the future I'll bolt on an HX35 or 40 lol. Once the ball is rolling regarding fitting all my parts and mapping etc, I'll start a project thread for people to see the outcome of the said mods. Thanks Mitch.

    Mitchyboy,

Nice try mate. I think you will find that I was the polite one. All that I said was " A turbo that was designed for a big diesel truck engine will not work on a small petrol engine " you then informed me that I need to go and look on the internet because ALL the Civics in the U.S. are using the Holset turbo because its cheap and way better than the Garrett GT28. I then reiterated that it is unlikely to work at which point YOU rudely said YOU WON'T BE WORKING MY CAR and slammed down your phone.
Which is fine by me because I do not need to be putting my name to dubious upgrades on 500 cars.

    Regards,
    Hamish.

P.S. Those you tube links aren't very scientific ! Are you really sure the Porsche is giving it full beans ?? And that power curve has to be about the worst shape possible.

Regarding the 500 quote I fully agree and as many people know a car at that price will need a hell off a lot of work to run big power as the parts have had so much wear and tear ask any one who has seriously tuned there car and what needs to be replaced and strengthend you only have to look at Paul 850 touring rep to see the price of things so I can deffinatly see why he is not intrested in adding more power or working and a car like that unless its been fully done.
Now regarding ecu tuning I haven't a clue so ill leave it at that.

    Hamish,

You totally snubbed what I was saying and didn't listen at all even when I tried to explain it has been done on loads of petrol cars with success. You actually said, I quote, ''a diesel turbo will not work on a petrol''. You come across as an arrogant 'know it all'. Maybe it's just out of your realms mate. I hear you are good for off the shelf maps though so not knocking you for that. I'll look elsewhere.

Dubious upgrades......your car doesn't have a dubious turbo convertion.

Handbags at dawn.... I have to answer the phone and talk to these dreamers, tyre kickers, shakers makers and time wasters everyday of the week. Do you see me jumping on a public forum saying " just had this from Norwich on the phone wants me to map up the Jet engine he is fitting to his Volvo sometime soon when he's finished looking at porn on the internet " No you don't. I just carry on with my day knowing that 99% of the people I speak to are intelligent and respectable members of the human race. No need to slag them off. Am I not allowed to defend myself and my professional opinion when it is being abused on an internet forum ?

Learn how to speak to people, and listen to them, then you may not get a response like this. Volvo tuning is a small world and you basically said in so many word that I know F'all, when I have sat here researching for months about what mods to do to my 500 shi??er. I'm no mechanic and no mapper but I can go by other peoples experiences of what works on their cars and by asking advice from people who've had success. Funny how most say to avoid you. I should have listened and not bothered calling.

your car doesn't have a dubious turbo convertion.

If we didn't try new things then the tuning scene would never progress. I've gone down the exhaust, remap, filter route before and want to go a step further this time and try something a bit different.

    Mitchy,

I don't know it all, that I do know. I do however know that the compressor and turbine are very different on diesel truck turbo to the compressor and turbine that are needed on a relatively small petrol turbo.
Out of my realms mate.....I think not. I'm not just a 'flasher' like most of the people in my industry. For example last week I mapped... yes mapped myself... not downloaded a generic map a 2008 Range Rover TDV8 and on Thursday I remapped.....yes again I made the calibration myself....for a brand fire new Skoda Octavia VRS 170 Tdi with the latest Bosch EDC17 which incedentally has anti tuning.
If you want off the shelf maps for Volvo's I also have the best you will find for Volvos in the UK.
With regards your car please do look elsewhere.

    Regards,
    Hamish.

Agreed... To begin with we are modifying a Volvo instead of the norm of a Ford or a Jap crap (with vtech) (Not a fan of jap cars sorry) This means most of what we do is bespoke or something simular to something that may have been done before..

Trial and error and researching is how we learn and get better

Yes. The 16T and 15g are so similar in size I would consider them to be interchangeable.

Couldn't agree more, there will be no problem with using the holset as long as you can fit it in the space, I'm fitting an enormous turbo over the winter.

Do the research first it will normally reduce the amount of trial and error

There is a phrase that is often quoted in Motorsport " There is nothing new in Motorsport." meaning there are really no new ideas it's just old ideas recycled when you see something "new" and this applies for both the things that work and the things that don't.
