Quandry over my Saffron C70 T5...

    Hi guys,

I have a bit of a dilemma. My uncle has a V6 Rover 75 that he has offered to me at a really good price, but do I change from my T5?

My car is at 106k miles and I have recently had to replace a few things, including the front wheel bearings which needed a new driveshaft due to the splines seizing.

The Rover has only done 41k miles with my uncle as the only owner, it is fully serviced and in good condition. Both cars have recent cambelt changes, which is an expensive pig of a job on the V6.

    Question is, do I change?

AND if I did change, would there be much interest in a saffron 1999 C70 T5 with a manual gearbox?

    Alex.

T5 will be a much better drive IMO. The V6 will feel gutless. You won't get much for the T5 and you will want it a back a week after you sold it and prob won't be able to find one with cambelt just done etc. Keep it.

    Main problem is, the money.

The fuel consumption is about the same, insurance is a little more.

But the main thing is the purchase. He wants to sell for £1500, but will give it to me for nothing!
Free car, selling mine to potentially find a gas conversion, which would bring the running costs down.

Ok guys, you have convinced me! I'll keep the T5.

Besides the rover is 6" wider and parking is tight at my house, and the insurance is 40% higher!

Anyone want to buy a Rover? ;-)

The car before My C70 T5 was a Rover 620ti. Nearly as fast as the T5 and more reliable. Whether I simply had a bad experience with the T5 or not, it just kept asking for more and more money. In fact, it's possibly the most costly car i've owned.

The 75 was a replacement for the 600 series and they were generally considered to be decent cars. I think the Diesel version was considered the best engine as it was a BMW block apparently.

My C70 T5 died at 117,000 miles. I'd spent a lot of money keeping it in good shape but it sort of slowly fell apart. I loved driving it and got a lot of comments about it but, it was an overall disappointment in retrospect.

I've gone back to Audi now. I'm not sure if i'd personally go back to a Rover but if you can get a good one, built at the Longbridge plant, then it could be a smart move.. A very personal decision..

    Best of luck..

The 240hp C70 T5 weighs in at 1500kg and the 620ti weighs in at 1365kg with 200hp so naturally the T5 would be a touch quicker but they are a similar 150hp/tonne. I too had a 600 with the psa sourced diesel and it was a very good car. I bought it at 100k and did 20k in it before parting company and it cost nothing but 1 service and discs and pads.

Rover did fit the 130hp (ish) BMW diesel engine, and it was pretty good - just the company itself that let the side down.

Which Audi do you drive now?

Rovers are ££££, all of them. The V6 75 is no where near the car of the volvo, both are a pain to do clutches on however the timing belt on the rover is a **** job to do but the one on the volvo's are a peice of piss, why do people worry about them so much? I've done numerous rover head gaskets, admitidley not the v6 ones but all rovers are an obsolete peice of turd, hence they stopped making the shaggers....

The last really well built rover was in 1976 the P6 ideally with the V8 up front, while I liked the SD1 vitesse ideally the twin plenium the P6 was far better built car.
