    Unhappy Etm

Thanks to Wobbly Dave for the link about the ETM problem:

    http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosins...uto-170127.htm

So the question is; how can I tell if that's what the problem is? One thing I have noticed is that when the car is started from cold it idles really rough for about 2 seconds, seems as though it's missing on at least one cylnder. It always clears after the same length of time & the idle is rock-steady after that. How do you clean the ETM, as refered to in the article? Would I have any fault-codes stored? Is there any info on the VADIS disc? (I'm thinking of aquiring one) So I take it the ETM costs a small fortune from the dealers? I am getting p*s*ed off with this car already :-(

Message for VT -----> Can you fix it ?!?!?!?!

    Cheers,
    Chrisall.

Fault codes for the ETM will be stored in the ETM itself. Read by Vadis / VC2000 and not by OBD2 as far as I know.

Don't panic - your ETM may be fine. It is hard to tell without proper fault code reads. If you have rock solid idle then that is a good sign. Does it return nicely to ~900rpm when you blip the throttle?

You may have a faulty coil pack - it does happen and your plugs may be knackered.

My point is - Don't get pissed off - just chill. Get the car looked at (if you are near Bromsgrove - go to VT, if you are near Nottingham - go to DPA) - all will be fine.

Yeah, after the initial roughness the idle is fine & drops back to 900rpm after blipping. Plugs are new so that's one thing eliminated. I'll plug my OBD2 interface in when I get it & see if that tells me anything. As regards VADIS, can I load that onto my laptop & connect it to OBD2? Will that tell me anything more than generic OBD2 software?

I think a trip to VT is gonna be required soon.

Don't mess or waste time - just take it to VT. We don't even know if you have the right plugs.

Are you sure it's a 2 second idle problem? - low oil can make these engines sound noisy whilst the oil gets to the top of the engine. Mine does it only when oil is at bottom mark of dipstick, and stops after being topped-up.
    Just a thought.

    Fun in the twisties!

No! You need the VC2000 interface box (which I think costs about a grand).

So much better to take the car someplace equipped to diagnose it, as has been suggested

How does it run on the road?

    Any hesitation ?

If you are hands on,take off the spark plug cover, and one by one check the coil packs.

They have springs which contact to the plugs - just make sure they look ok.

It runs fine, hard to describe but it just seems 'lazy' when accelerating. I suppose it's hard to make a subjective judgement but it is certainly slower than I expected & I feel that it's not as it should be. Seat-of-the-pants dyno & all that! I've just changed the plugs, NGK BKR7EVX as recommended. I'm not adverse to taking it to VT or any other specialist for diagnosis, it's just that I am very hands-on & have always serviced / fixed my cars myself. I appreciate that in this case that may just not be possible.

    Cheers,
    Chrisall.

I too am the same way. I like to get stuck in - but you have to be careful with the ME7 cars - they are not as interactive or forgiving.

While they're changing the ETM unit, for an extra half-an-hour's labour there's some valve (think it's the "PCV valve") that they should check is clear as well. It often blocks up and can cause premature failure of the ETM. Think that checking it involves taking off the intake manifold which is why half an hour.

With the amount of failures of ETM they shouldn't need telling!

Don't know if you've seen it but there's a company in Kent advertising on e-bay, they'll do an own unit rebuild on your ETM for £150 with a 2 year warranty. The phone number is 01634 230055, certainly a lot cheaper than Volvo.

Think its about time WobblyDave branched out into to ETM repairs as well as ABS stuff.

I have taken them apart. It is on my list of things to do. Main problem is sourcing the replacement potentiometers required to do the fix. The fix is not essentially that hard.

Could also be a MAF sensor - often the symptoms are that the car feels flat and not responsive. We can actually check the MAF sensor whilst running on the dyno.
