    Cool noisy start up

    hi ive got a 1998 v70 and when i start the car in the morning it sound like for a slip second that i have no oil at the top end, it sounds like tappets noise to me, the car has nt done many miles for the year only 103000 any thoughts thanks ged

    Don't they all do this?.. down to the hydraulic tappets?

    Yep, mine rattles for a bit then settles down. if that's what yours is doing, Ged, worry ye not.

    give it an engine flush then some good fresh oil and filter,usually helps,
    and may prevent any further damage.

    Did I read in one of the hand books somewhere that this is normal? Mine (All 3 I've had) seem to do it in colder weather more.

    while the tappets are making a noise just dont go over 3000 rpm till they have warmed all up and stopped making a noise

    Mine would have stopped before I had a chance to press the clutch, Let alone drive it

    mine does this for a split second on start up if ive not run the car for a week or so

    thanks everyone for the info mine only does it in the morning must be like me poor in the morning hard to get going, it only does it for a second or two then its fine i just don't want to do any damage thanks again ged

    A second or two is normal. Make sure the oil change schedule has been stuck to, and then I don't think you have anything else to worry about

    mine is a little rattly on start up but quickly quietens down. i've read somewhere, maybe in the manual they may be rattly on start up.
    It's a 5 Cylinder Orchestra!
