Advice Please on Buying my First T5

    Hi Everybody,

I am looking for a change and fancy going for one of my childhood icons a T5, but what i know about these is not worth knowing.

    I thought there was just a T5 but of course i have found out we have a 850 T5, 850 T5 R and 850R i think and of course a V70R

So firstly how do the above models vary in spec and what would you guys recomend me to go for as my first T5.

Any advice, opinions and pointers greatly apreciated

    Tim..

PS i know to avoid yellow ones with 300bhp

Probably the best imo would be a 850r manual

First thing to know is that all T5 engine's are the same it's just turbo's and slightly different maps on the standard one's.

What's you budget? are you looking for a standard one or modded?

Personally i prefer the 850's over the V70's(ive got both) they just feel a bit rawer and a better drive.

I couldnt agree more with James, you need to know your budget.

You are however entering a market of high mileage, high performance cars... most Volvo's will go on forever but its essential to thoroughly check them over.

Your now entering the bewildering world of Volvo specs!

Well with regards to budget what would you say i would have to spend to get a good example, i am not adversed to any modded cars providing they are sensible.

And theres me thinking i would have to sell my E39.

To be honest there is something about the shape of the 850 that does it for me, i guess the interior and mod cons on the newer models will be more advanced.

I have to agree I have always been into the "square" look of the 850's. Its looks make it even more supprising when you realise actually how good it is. I have countless work colleauges who now stick up for me when passers by laugh at the old Ovlov and say "Actually mate I think you'll find that is one hell of a bit of machinery" to which the "yeah right... ok" attitude is often adopted. After a short trip out many are persuaded to think otherwise.

Either way you cant go wrong with any choice of Volvo, they are all fast, reliable, comfortable and relatively easy to service and maintain yourself.

If you want originality go for an 850 T5, if you can find it the R is the one with the best kit but the T5-R has a far more limited production run.

If however you want to sacrifice the looks of the 850 for the technological advancements that are seen in the newer S/V/C series cars I dont think you will be dissapointed either.

A really good 850 T5 will demand as little as 1K with the S/V series around the 2k mark and C series closer to 3k.

The 850R's and T5-R's are in the S and V series price range for a good en at around 2k.

You never know though you may well find a gem for far less.

850's with a little bit of tunning are probably the most insane to drive, like you said the interiors are very dated now, TBH the S/V70 interiors IMO are still nice to look at and as for mod cons there is only a few bits and bobs a new car has on the old ones the 850's were, are still a high spec car even though it does look like the interior was designed on a etch a sketch when compared to new ones.
    Thanks

I was reffering to a mint low mileage C70 Frankie. I have never seen one for less than 2.5-3K that I have stood back at and thought wow that really does look the business.

now the etch a sketch wasnt even invented when the 940 was so god knows what they were designed on. My dad use to have a 960 turbo before his first T5 totally standard beast dont remember to much about it though.
