i want to replace my rear pads this weekend, but reading "the software that should not be mentioned" it says i might need a special tool to remove the old pads - is this likely to be a problem as obviously i havent got the tool?
cheers guys

The only 'special' tool you'll need Jim is a fairly narrow punch to drift the retaining pins out. Mine were fairly wedged in so needed a fair bit of persuation.
Rear pads are easy.
How to is in the KB section (including how to stop them squeakin')

I recommend DS Premier pads on the back or Volvo OEM. If you want the shims then get in touch. VT also stock them now.

Also, before you remove the pads from the calipers, be sure to compress the piston using a pry-bar and wedging it in there and apply pressure. It will make the re-assembly process much easier, trust me

Ooops - did I not say? Personally I use a big pair of water pliers to push the calipers back in. Remember to pump the pedal a few times when you start the car too.

thanks guys, i was a bit worried when i saw "special tool ####" thanks for the info.
i have a drift to use to knock the pins out - 3mm i think i need, have some welding clamps to push the pistons back (good to put these back into service - my last car had wind-in ones).
not sure about these shims - whats the score with these?
the discs are fairly scored from the previous owner so i'm hoping they'll measure up ok otherwise i might need to replace these too!
Pads to fit are ferodo premier, cheap but good apparently (?)
thanks guys

Mate the shims are used to stop the squealing.Originally Posted by jim_from_surrey
I also used the premiers on mine, literally minutes to fit. The preperation of the pads took longer (mental note must charge battery on sander fully next time LOL).
I didn't use the shims at first. BIG mistake the squeal from the brakes the first time i touched them was deafening. Emptied the street of cats thats for sure. Got some shims pronto refitted pads no more squeal.

No, VT do have the very same lockheed/Ap self-adhesive shims. I also used to be able to get them from my local parts shop. Personally I think it is far easier to get Hamish to send you them.
Shamfering the edges helps but I found the shims are the only thing that actually worked. You can also get metal shims from Volvo.

When I changed the rears on mine, I just pryed the shims off the old pads and used them. A bit of copper grease for good measure and I've had no problems.
As Jonathan Ross would have said....
