    Droning noise

    Hi. I have a droning noise that seems to come from the front drive train when I turn corners. It's quite noticeable at low speeds and seems to be getting worse. I'm assuming it has to be either wheel bearings or cv joints. Can't decide whether to try bearings first or maybe go for complete drive shafts. I'm not doing the job myself so labour costs will be more if I do it piecemeal.

    Try driving the car without the wife/girlfriend I find that stops the droningnoise

    Take your point frankie. I think I'll go with bearings first. I see partsforvolvosonline do them for £62.60 a side but I've read some bad comments about Scantech stuff.

    Does anyone have any experience with Scantech wheel bearings from PFS?

    Well, finally got around to having the front wheel bearings changed and it did seem a little quieter for a short while. Now it's getting even worse.
    Surely it has to be cv joints next?

    Moby have you tried the rear bearings? the chassis/subframe on these cars are so taught it may be resonating from the rear (ooh err)

    EDIT or perhaps the new bearings have failed/come loose in some way?

    Check your tyres !. I don't mean a quick look have a really close examination of the tread especially the inner third or so. We are finding more and more wheelbearing symptoms (droning noise, changing tone going around corners etc) are actually turning out to be tyres going out of shape. What you need to do is run the flat of your hand over the tread back and forth then continue to do this as you move across the treads width towards the back. Despite the tread 'blocks' the tyres surface should feel quite smooth but if it's started to deteriorate it will feel rough and uneven and the blocks of the tread will be stepped, lifted and uneven. This seems to happen mostly on the inner edge of the tyre so often goes unnoticed and more commonly on back tyres but I have seen it happen on the front with tyres barely a year old !. And no it doesn't seem to matter what make they are either it affects both premium brands (Pirelli, Continental, Uniroyal, I've seen this on all of them) as well as budget brands so now the first thing we check when a vehicle comes in with a suspected noisy wheelbearing is the tyres and over half have a defective tyre causing the noise.

    Good point Martin. I'll investigate the rears. Doubt the fronts have given up yet as I've only done about 150 miles since they were fitted.

    Interesting about the tyres nob. I'll look into that as well.

    I assume from your replies that you don't think it's cv joints which is good. Thanks folks.

    Tyre wise move the front to the back etc and see if that changes the sound.

    Actually, thinking about it I don't think the tyres can be the culprit because they were swapped, front to back, just before the front bearings were changed and I doubt the mileage I've done since would be enough to cause any uneven wear.
    I had a good listen today when driving and it's definitely coming from the front, not the back.
    Are we sure it can't be the cv joints or something else in the drive shafts?

    The tyres going out of shape problem is nothing to do with low or high mileage use, the tyres I've seen often still have 5-6 mm of tread left on them it's just that the tread blocks towards the edge of the tyre lift and become uneven, I'm not sure why, doesn't affect any particular vehicles, doesn't seem to be linked to over or under-inflation or how the cars driven. it is a bit 'odd' !

    Just had a thought, I have had a noisy driveshaft support bearing being the cause of a unnecessary front wheel bearing replacement before, might be worth a look.

    The way I found it was with the front of the car up in the air with the engine running and in gear so that the wheels are spinning, then listening around with a stethoscope (or with ear pressed to long screwdriver !) to the wheel bearings etc till I found the support bearing whirring away. I should point out that this way on a ramp so a lot easier and safer then on stands !
