Hmm all depends on the engine. My 850R doesn't really use much oil at all i think i've topped it up once since the last oil change which was 3000 miles ago and that was only about 1/2 litre. Mine only has 74000 miles on it so it may not be worn so much. I'd expect as the engine reaches higher miles it will get through more oil. Driving style is another one if your 150 miles a week is all short distance it will use more oil.

Tolerence for an 850 is up to 1 litre per thousand miles iirc.

What oil are you using ? maybe it's too thin and it's burning it off. I put 10\40 in my t5 and it doesn't seem to use any, don't do loads of miles in it like.

Hope 10\40 is right, please correct me if im wrong !

Virtually none in mine. In 6 months it'll drop from the maximum mark on the dipstick to just over half way, then it gets another oil change.

Suggest you get a compression test - dead easy, get it done wet and dry. Check oil and water for contamination as per prev poster, and also see whats coming out of the back.
Although it should not be that high, your consumption is not that unusual.

Mines now using about 5L per 5000m (i.e a gallon between oil changes) No obvious leaks, no drips, runs well. BUT It poofs out a gurt cloud of blue white smoke when you pull of from idling for more than 2 mins so its a bit of an eco hazard. But sailed through the MOT with absolute bare minimum emissions.

A year ago the compressions were 171,171,172,174,170 so pretty good for a 220k old lady and running fine. No oilin water or vice versa...

So - I Suspect valve stems/and or seals. Just cant bring myself to pull the head off just yet and risk it not sealing again.
