    intermittent s60 problem,help please!!!!

    hi guys,
although i love my s60, its developed a problem thats doing my head in.!
some times when i start it up, either hot or cold, upon the turn of the key, the rev counter goes nuts, zippin some of the way round, all of the way round or just a quater, this results in bad starting, eventually it splutters into life, but its not good.
sometimes it dos`nt do it at all, and starts fine, without the rev counter going mad or even moving at all.
has anyone had this problem or can point me in the right direction?
    thanks in advance
    craig.

Not had this issue, might be worth getting the codes read though in the first instance

    ,.,

i thought these models had a dash cluster issue where it does funny things and or the display goes funny aswell,
other thing it could be is ignition barrel,
as stated try get codes read and see if that shows anything 1st.

Just thought I would add this to the thread, the dash cluster going wild doesn't have an effect on the engine or the rest of the car, other than the car won't lock if you remove the cluster. I know aaallll about mental dash clusters, believe me! (I just bit-the-bullet and bought a 2nd hand one off eeebay - had enough of re soldering it every month)
May be worth checking the sensors on the engine - crank or cam sensors could be giving a dodgy reading and upsetting the ecu?

yeh, will check them out, thanks mate.

its ok for ages, then does it again.
its always ok and starts, and once its started its spot on.

also my display says my alarm needs a service, and the siren dunt work, does anyone know where the siren is?
oh and how easy or hard it is to replace, and where and how much a siren will be.

    thanks in advance

Do these cars have an air bypass valve for cold start. Its sounds exactly like the problem my lancia has / had, and it was the air bypass valve. Quite common on a lot of cars, just not sure if the volvo has one or not.

The alarm problem is quite common too. The internal battery for the siren leaks and corrodes the terminals inside the siren module. You could try and fix it yourself by removing it and opening it and seeing if you can re solder the terminals. to get at it, you need to have the drivers side front wheel off, remove the wheelarch lining and it's under the washer bottle. You will need to cut the rivets holding it on to the framework and use self tapping screws to put it back on when finished. I know this because I have to do mine sometime, perhaps after I get the new dash cluster in.
    Hope this helps...

Ok, maybe there isn't a crank sensor, I havn't yet extended my knowledge past the turbo and related bits and bobs. But this problem does seem like a sensor somewhere is throwing the ecu into a wobbly. Possibly a dodgy connection between a sensor and the ecu.

My rudimentary understanding of this is that the crank sensor sends the rpm signal to the ECM, the rev counter issues coupled with poor starting sounds like it could be at fault?

Reading the codes should verify the issue
