    Gearbox issue?

What are the likely reasons for the car falling out of reverse and 2nd gear? Basically, when coasting (not under a lot of load) the car suddenly and randomly falls into neutral when in 2nd mainly but has done it in reverse too...

Dropping out of gear is not a good sign, how good was the other box?

Might have been worth taking a peek inside the replacement 'box before fitting, bit late now, I know.

i know what may be mentioned but I was sold that box as 'all good, no issues' so had it installed. To strip back down and use parts from both boxes and replace is gonna cost me another £702+ oil and that i am not prepared to do anymore. And I am not doing it myself. I have not the knowledge nor the tools.

I either live with it as is......or......do i actually have a 4 letter word carved on my forehead or something........first it was a car worth £300, then an actuator that almost killed my engine, and now a gearbox that's no better than the one i removed?

Unless it is a fitting issue? It's either:

    a] fitting issue
b] needs time to settle (as was advised to me)
    c] knackered

thing is, the guy who sold me the gearbox is probably gonna be livid when he sees this as a post as opposed to contacting him......but, dont know what options there are short of full refund and payment for fitting (£701)? And that aint gonna happen. It was sold as secondhand (albeit 'good, no issues'), I have no receipt and as far as he knows, it may have been fine in his car.....

I can (and shall have to) live with it, just feel f****d over once again......no disrespect to anyone but this has cost me £3,300 so far and it still aint working and has the same issues......

Through my own selfishness in having this effing car, i have now spent the family holiday fund on it, but that's my issue. Should have stuck with my ****ty Peugeot.

That's essentially what i am asking with this thread.....but the garage said if it does it in reverse, 2nd and 4th then it's the syncromesh.......i have no idea about 4th tbh as only used it for 3 days.......

If it is the cable, then great but things dont look good so far

TBH mate your garage hasn't got a clue what they're on about... I hope it was the YTS lad that came out with that useful piece of wisdom, the synco is on each gear and allows the smooth intermeshing of gears

If you're having problems with 2nd, 4th and reverse then it's the lateral throw from the selector that's not been set up right when re fitting the box. (I'm not sure on these box's just how much adjustment there is, if I get change I'll have a look on mine later)

I had a quick look under the bonnet on mine today and can't really see any adjustment on the box side, most cars have some form of adjustment for the linkages (you might have to do a bit of research on just where it is on the 850's) but did note how the linkage is attached, now it is possible that the nylon bushes that fix the linkage to the box is either worn or damaged thus allowing play or if they've forgotten to to put the horseshoe retaining clip back on or even put it in the wrong slot then it would hinder the pull movement when putting it into 2nd, 4th and reverse.

Don't let them fob you off saying it's a faulty box... it'd deffo just a selector issue.

Did 150 miles today....did not slip out once in any gear.....until i went out later tonight and it jumped out of 2nd again I am unsure it's a box or a fitting issue. The guys who did the work have done everything else brilliantly. I doubt it's a dodgy box too as I know the seller is genuine and would not have flogged it knowing...if a fitting issue i will not be impressed as I took their word it was the syncromesh.....further googling suggests syncromesh tho? And a worn linkage.......hope it's the latter
