Personally I use the smallest stud extractor I can then increase in size until you get lucky - drill a hole then put the stud extractor in, which will find purchase by turning in the opposite direction to that needed to tighten the head bolt

As above, a guide will help (something cylindrical with a hole to centralise the drill bit & stud extractor on the damaged section)

drop the guide into the relevant hole, drill a pilot hole through the guide into the snapped bolt
drift the extraction bar into the pilot hole, add extraction nut to the bar and wind out

    absolute piece of cake!!

Was the swarf from the drilling a problem?

The guide helps to keep the swarf in, but worth having a magnet to hand, just in case

Are you sticking with a pre ME7 head, or going for a ME7 with VVT delete?

pulled the car out of the garage today, to have a sort out and found even more damage! lol

front bumper that's been hiding in the car:

and the rear axle has moved quite a bit, you can see the bent spring mount and the contact mark on the axle:

car is now sitting low on this corner for some reason, I'm sure it will sorted when the new rear axle goes on.

    and finally another Volan! lol

    Happy days! lol
