The O.E front discs are always vented, and the rears are always solid.
(don't think you can buy vented rears?)

Mine will be needing new discs and pads soon-ish, and I'm planning on going for mintex O.E. quality discs, black diamond or EBC pads, and upgrade the hoses to goodridge or H.E.L braided, with some performance ap brake fluid.

Standard Volvo discs or Brembos if you can't find any good value Volvo ones on the Bay.

Cheap drilled discs tend to crack around the holes. Grooved discs are noisy and make sod all difference for our kinds of driving.

Volvo pads or Ferodo DS2500s, for my money.

Check and most likely change the brake fluid

Depending on year, you can't get DS2500's for a later S/V40(2001 onwards).

The older ones fit but you loose about 5mm of inside contact.

Is that so, I hadn't realised that. I'd only ever fitted a pair to the Phase 1 cars. Thanks Judge.

I'll definitely be having a rethink of my proposed brake setup!

As has as already been said, cheap drilled discs can crack easily.

I had grooved discs on my t4 with ferodo pads and then with ebc red stuff (which a lot of peole don't like) and they were very good with both and were only noisy when braking hard from high speed.
The redstuff pads got a very tough test when i went on holiday to north devon, with some fast driving and (very) steep hills and did well, with very little brake fade. Although i also had braided brake lines and new(ish) brake fluid.
Downside with the grooved discs is that they wear out your pads quicker.

On a normal car i don't think you could go wrong with some normal brembo discs and ferodo pads.

Im thinking a change of fluid also with some quality fluid. It shud be due its been in nearly 2 yrs now. Are the braided hoses worth putting on in place of standerd? I do think its a great car and want to make sure it stops on a penny so to speak. Then got some other little bits and its ready for summer

...... I did fit some to see what would happen.. The missing contact patch makes hardly any difference.

So I still have DS2500 plus Brembo MAX discs with yellow goodridge braided hoses and high performance 5.1fluid.

I haven't had any brake fade yet, but I think my ABS system is a bit temperamental...
