    I'm back - 2003 V70RAWD

Has it really been 2.5 years since I logged in here??? Jeeez!!!! Well I'm back!!!!

Those that know of me from before will remember I have a P1 V70-R AWD in Saffron mapped to around 300BHP and running on LPG . Just bought a 2003 V70-R AWD last night, so immediately thought of coming on here for a chat!!!

So, it's in minty green, has been remapped to around 330BHP and seems to drive like a dream. Passed it's MOT today after replacing 2 tyres which had bulges, so all good.

Can the fitted double DIN in the P2 -R model be replaced with any other double DIN unit, with a suitable facia faceplate? Or is the unit in the -R model somehow different from standard V70's of the same age? I'd like to get my DD unit out of my P1 (as the P1 is off the road whilst I rebuilt the top of the engine), as I'm missing my MP3s and Ipod connections - anyone done it?

Also, the rear bumper has parking sensors in it, but I see no mention of parking sensors in the manual, and it doesn't appear to beep when I reverse close to stuff. The car was sold as having parking assist, so I need to know if: a) the P2 V70-R AWD has parking assist at all? b) If it does, does it come on automatically or do I need to do something? c) Was it an optional extra, all cars have the sensors in the bumper, but the rest of the kit is optional

    Cheers all!

    Gaz

Parking assist was an optional extra but fitted to some cars if ordered and should be detailed in your book.
The button marked P at the bottom of your radio console deactivates /activates the parking assist sensors.

Here's the odd thing, the book is fairly generic and covers a multitude of engines, headlights etc, so clearly for a whole host of configured options, but still does not mention parking assist.

I have no P button anywhere on the dash, BUT...

One time this morning I went into reverse and the radio muted and there was a beep through the speakers, before the radio unmuted and resumed. Could this have been PA activating? If so, is there a common fault of very sporadic activation etc?
    Cheers!

Even with an aftermarket system you should have button to switch the system off if you didn't and had a trailer on the back it would activate all the time.Your radio should and will mute and beep if there is an obstruction present the closer you are the faster it beeps, get someone to stand behind you to test but remember and stop as we wouldnt like you to run them over. You can always have a chat with your freindly local dealer
Clean your sensors but normaly if there dirty they should activate that is why it is important to keep them clean also check your connections
The genuine volvo system is excellent like most manufactures ones and i wouldnt be without them.
    Have fun and enjoy

nice car mate......i had after market ones fitted to my Renault traffic and did nt have button, mine did nt work until they were about 2 ft away from what you was backin up to, ( which my mate who has had a few after market ones said was normal) but mine packed up after a while, still got the beep whem i selected reverse but nothing after... If these are after market have a look under the rear bumper and you should see the wiring to each sensor.. mine sensors where connected to each other via a bullet joint and it had come apart but also corroded badly... so replaced the bullet joint and reconnected ... after did that they came back to life... might be worth a look...

The rear park assist should activate when you select reverse, it should ocme up on the volvo radio facia that it is active, you should have a P button to turn it off. It starts activating when you are quite close, it should beep from one or both of the rear speakers, so if you have something on your right corner it will beep out of the rear right speaker.. ditto for the left side, if it is directly beind you it will beep out of both rears. It will reach a continuous tone when you are approx 50cm away from an object, telling you to stop.

If you have the sensors in the bumper and its a genuine volvo fit and not some cheap maplins unit then all the above should happen. It maybe a cheap maplins unit. Generally if the sensors are colour coded to the bumper I would suggest its a volvo unit, if they are black, its probably and aftermarket unit.

The biggest fault on them that I have seen is that they beep continuously when in reverse even when not near an object, this can happen on frosty mornings, or if they get very dirty, it also happens bizzarely if the boot is to full !

Best way to check is to get some one to satnd behind the car whilst it is in reverse and then get them to walk up to the back of the car... it should then start beeping at you, if they can get to the car and no beep... then i suspect they are not working.

    Good luck with that one.

Oh it's definately Volvo sensors in the bumper as they are colour coded.

There is definately no button, and I've not seen anything come up on the radio.

But it DOES have PA! It came on when I next went for a spin and came back - selected reverse, got the beep so slowly reversed it toward a wall and sure enough it did it's job once I got fairly close.

So it looks to me like it may simply not be engaging consistently, or theres some other "rules" I'm not aware of yet (maybe it needs to have the radio off?)

Anyway now I know it does have it, I know not to shout at the seller for lying, and I can now work out when it does and doesn't work to see if I have an issue or not.

It's no biggie as I've never needed aids before, its just if it's on the car, I'd quite like it to work

When i had them on my BMW ... the dealers told me when cleaning car dont get polish etc on the sensor as affects radius..... might be that where you bought it polished it up... give the sensors a good clean... but having radios etc would nt affect them cause once they on they are on...only other thing as i said earlier check under bumper for loose or corroded connection... i know the PA stands for parking Assist , had same on BMW....

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I don't have a button marked "PA" (or anything else to do with park assist), when I said "BUT I do have PA!!!" - I simply meant that the car clearly has the full parking assist system, because it enabled itself once today.

I've since done some testing and engagement does seem to be either a black art that I don't know about, or it simply has a high percentage of not coming on at all - I've sat putting it in and out of reverse numerous times, and the system simply hasnt beeped or anything....

    Most annoying

Everything you wrote was easy to understand.
I read that there was a problem with the radio display which might mean there is a problem in that dept e.g wiring.
I would go to someone who can check out your system and it shouldn't cost the earth.

Beautiful car! Slightly off topic, but does anyone know how much to fit rear parking sensors at the Dealer on a V70R?

Well, it seems that there's a switch issue in the car. I had a friend watch the car whilst trying to piece together when the parking assist switches on and when it doesn't - it was immediately obvious that the reversing light also doesn't come on most of the time, and of course when the light does come on, this is when the parking assist also works.

So looks like a reverse gear switch is flaky. Anyone know what I'm looking for, where it is, how easy access is etc?

    Cheers

If it's a manual then the reverse switch is under the gear linkage on top of the gear box. Remove the airbox and access is easy.
You'll see the plug wires poking out. You have to remove the linkage to get at it. Bit fiddly but nothing major.
iirc. The switch is superceeded so the plug may be different but comes with the new one in the box but your may be fine.
