    centre box replacement

    hi all,

Im toying with the idea of removing the suitcased size silencer in my t5 exhaust, using the tailpipe off a 740td, looks a similar diameter in the klarius book at work, but was wondering if anyone had actually done this mod on the cheap?

    something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLVO-740-940-...item439d2f97d2

if you know what i mean?

    ta, James

I'm looking to do this as my centre box is rattling, something has come adrift inside it, I was thinking of a piece of flexable tubing, you can get it on E-bay for £20 for one metre.

Let us know how you get on.

yeah, no probs, was looking for a cheaper solution than that even, also im not sure on the radius of the bends you can achieve with this flexy stuff.

might have to find a bit and see what its like.

right, its done, took a combination of an intermediate and tail pipe off a 7 or 9 series turbo and some imagination, (cheers andy).

i got hold of some flexy pipe through work but you cant get anywhere near a tight enough radius of bend to do the job.

be prepared though, its LOUD! a fair bit of resonance too at 2 to 2.5k in the revs, but cameron likes it, does sound good if you mash it.

this may be a silly question but doing this, does it affect or better the performance ?

I'd imagine it would let the engine breath better, so maybe earlier spool up etc

I dont think people upgrade to cat-back exhausts for nothing, it must improve it, surely ???

Up grading the exhaust i understand, but just wondered by de catting and having smaller boxes, does this help but i think it must as you say less restriction but just wondered does it do much or in other words is it worth doing for performance

IIRC i think the Jetex cat-back gives about 10bhp, from asking about.

Other brands im not too sure on.

will upgrade mine when the old one goes, but was just wondering about also having a de cat and how much diff that makes, may go for a custom made 3" stainless one done but will have to see how pennys go, also wife only letting certain upgrades be done when needed LOL

Join the club matey, my mrs is the same

Not sure if the car would go through the emissions without the cat on it, i know mine didnt with a knackered cat ( it was basically hollow ) so i had to replace it.

Maybe that was just my car, it did have the HLM 304 ecu in it, if it fails again i'll try it with a standard ecu.
