Angry MOT fail: steering stops / limiters for V70?

My V70 just failed it's MOT as the wheels are (ever so slightly) rubbing on the arch liners.

Can you get steering limiters for the Phase 2 cars? If so, anyone fitted them, or know how much they cost?

Other options... rip out the arch liners... fit narrower tyres... raise the suspension... any more?...

This might sound an unusual thing to say but have you taken it to a different garage lately?

I had a 05 Plate V70 D5 SE Sport with the lower suspension and the wheels permanentely rubbed in the arches you could see them wearing the plastic away. Took it to Volvo as it was a company car and they said they all do it.

Perhaps take it to a Volvo garage/specialist for re-test.
Arguing is pointless....she may not be right but she's never wrong

Tell her a remap is just having your satnav updated.....

Could do... I know it's common. Would rather not throw the £54 away for a new test though if I can help it!

Dont most S60 and V70 tyres rub?More so on the nearside probably. You have a choice.Fit narrower tyres or fit 3mm wheel spacers but these are not normally sold by Volvo as they do not recommend them. This method is rife in the states. They all do it.Are your tyres 235?
If I was you I would tell the mot tester to get stuffed as all these cars with wide tyres rub on the wheelarch. The noise will get less pronounced as the tyres wear down.It is a CHARACTERISTIC of these cars.End of.The rubbing is not a safety issue.
I honestly wouldnt touch the suspension. Its not worth it.
Have you thought of taking the car to a Volvo garage for the MOT? I guarantee you they wont fail it on the tyres rubbing.
    Good luck
    Steve

Running 225s I think. And there's no noise at all... the guy is just going by the book I think ("Nearside / Offside front tyre fouling a part of the vehicle"). Can't exactly tell the guy to get stuffed, he's the one with the magic pass/fail button!

I could go to Volvo for the MOT, but it means another test fee and I was trying to avoid that if I could think of a way.

And here's the most useful link: last page...
    http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repositor...ril%202007.pdf

    To quote:

    A tyre-some issue
We have had quite a few queries about Volvos
showing evidence of tyre contact with the
inner wing at some time. This evidence is not
a reason for failure on its own but has caused
testers some concern. The manufacturer has
also received queries from VTSs and concerned
vehicle owners, so they contacted us with some
    helpful advice.
When it comes to the Volvo S60/80 or V70,
it is possible that evidence of tyre contact with
the inner wheel arch may be seen. This may be a
design feature depending on the wheels and tyres
fitted, so Volvo has issued advice on tyre/wheel
fitment. The following table is for guidance only
and may be useful if a vehicle presenter asks a
VTS for advice about this. (table not reproduced here - look at the original PDF... above).
Remember this only refers to evidence of tyre
contact and only on these specific models.
However, it does not mean that similar evidence
will not be found on other makes and models.
Many car owners fit different tyres and wheels that
may cause similar marks, so if you have concerns
then issue advice to the presenter on the VT32!

Though having re-read that, it doesn't solve my problem. The tester said that the tyre was touching the bodywork without suspension deflection, ie just by turning the steering to full-lock. So I think it's lock-stops time. Or skinnier tyres.

I will have a look at the car in daylight tomorrow... to check! And if the tyres DON'T touch at full-lock, I will be back to the MOT station that copy of "Matters of Testing" faster than you can say "GIVE ME MY TEST FEE BACK!"

The reason theres no noise is that the tyres have worn down. The fouling marks were done when the tyres were new.I have an S60R on 235/18inch wheels and they are still rubbing.A T5 needs 225 tyres so you cant go thinner on the tyres.
I`m kinda lost on what to advise you.If theres no noise I dont see the testers problem
Go back there and argue. If he doesnt budge demand the test fee back or a second opinion.I have yet to hear of this causing a fail.My son is a Volvo trained MOT tester and he hasnt either.
You need to fight this for all our sakes.WIN THIS FIGHT BROTHER.

I dont have any spare wheels but the ones on Mrs Mas's car they are standard T5 alloys. If you're just talking about swapping them whilst you go to the MOT and back it's not a problem just give me a bell.

Need to check Mrs M has 4 legal tyres though as she has history for being a Tyre tight wad much to my disgust

By the way £54 for an MOT ? , the bloke down the road from our village chaeges 35 and has never stirthed me up with anything silly ?

    Regards

I'd love to take you up on that, Mas, and you are a gent for offering. But I don't think the stock 16"s will necessarily fit over my front brakes, I will have to check that!

Went back round to the garage this morning, waved "Matters of Testing" at them and asked whether I should appeal the decision or not. Got a pass certificate pretty soon after that.

THANKS to everyone for the help! Especially Engineer for pointing me to the link on the VOC.
