from the passenger seat it felt quicker, and it definitely felt like it was putting the power down better, I couldn't hold the camera steady at all especially when the boost really kicked in.

It's very difficult to tell, because it doesn't spin it's wheels so easy now. But I think it must be.

too far a journey to risk at the moment, I will be going on my local dyno on sunday, just for a comparison run

Looks like it's the end of my association with volvo. New engine is §§§§ed, blown it's head gasket in only about 20 miles of driving it. I'm not throwing any more time at it. I'll go back to tuning fiats, at least they don't throw their dummies out as soon as you give them some boost.

Noooo way, really sorry to hear that, don't give up, my fiat coupe turbo was very problematic to the point it set itself on fire!!
