lol as for the speed and tuning there just the same any of the td04 turbos can be fitted to both and for the look you might thing they v/s 70's look much better but other people may dissagree with the sharp looks of the 850 and not the rounded edges of the v/s70 also the 850r saloon comes with the classic rear spoiler that every one wants and much better looking alloys.

    Only on a Volvo forum?!

As above. Only on here can we debate, with a straight face, about how the "rounded" S/V70 is less preferred by many who rate the 850 better for looks.

Anywhere else and the words "boxy" and "angled" would be applied to both.

I prefer the S/V70 but only for the slightly more modern looking interior - externally I actually prefer the sharper looking 850 especially the R

I have to agree the 850 externally looks better and the V70 has a nicer dash board. However I preffer 850 T5-R/R seats to the V70 equivalent.

Frank if you can prove that the S/C/V series if faster and better inh everyway with some statistics I guess we will all have to bow down to the fact most members on here have bought the wrong car.

In standard for the S/V/C70's had more power than the earlier 850's. 0-60 was half a second quicker or so, and the top end speed was much conderably higher, limited to 155mph IIRC, whereas a standard 850 wouldn't hit 150mph, regardless of what your speedo says!

Personally I prefer the earlier P1 x70 series overall for a few reasons. Mainly that it has the same basic engine as the 850 (pre-me7). The x70 series is a much more refined comfortable car than the 850, yet maintains a lot of the rawness and driving satisfaction that the P2 lacks IMHO. The interior, as I think everyone agrees is far better in terms of looks and quality.

Externally I'd probably have to say the 850R saloon is my favourite looking of the P1 cars. But if you're comparing a bog standard, nothing special, povity spec 850 with a x70 of the same spec, the 850 lags way behind IMO.

Gotta go with 850R in mint condition with some considerate mods is the all-time classic.

I think Chris is right from what I've heard that the p1 x70 added a lot without taking away much - but the 850R just looks so Swedish and retro - awesome.

I read somewhere that the X70 series had 1800 improvements over the 850!!!

I was looking for a P1 V70 T5 (No ME7 thanks) to start with but couldnt find any tidy ones for under £1000 so went for the 850 I suppose the X70s command more of a price premium because the mainstream buyers will spank over the X70 series for the more modern "socially acceptable" rounded features.

The V70 interior has less rattles and squeaks compared to the 850 but really, if you have a specced up 850 is a V70 that much better?

Personally I dont care what friends, work colleagues think about my volvo "its ugly" "square" or whatever, it destroys whatever they drive and is by far one of the best value for money cars on the road today.
