225's on the front and 215's on the back

I've got a slight chafing issue on the rear of my S40.

Running 225/45 R 17 both front and back.

A drop to 215/45 R17 should should the issue as it's just fouling the arch by a couple of millimeters on big bumps.

My question is.... will a car pass it's MOT etc... if the front and back tyres are a slightly different profile?

Hmm thanks - in that case....

any suggestions for rub? The lip on the wheel arch comes in quite deep (about 10mm)

Would a body shop be able to file knock a couple of MM off it ?

I ran 225's with 40mm offset on 8.5 inch wheels, these are 7.5 so they're not pulled as wide... which seems to be the cause of the rub just at the shoulder edge of the tyre.

some alloy wheel retailer/specialist will be able to roll the lip up for you, i know Demon Tweeks do it & think it cost about £35 per arch

Park it in a "less desirable" area of Glasgow at a weekend, and the arches will be rolled in when you return... Unfortunately, so will the rest of the wing!!!!!

And before anyone berates me for having a go at Glasgow, that's where I am originally from, so I'm allowed - LOL!!!

... Mind you, my car is often around Maryhill and it's not been robbed yet - touch wood!

Not trying to disagree ... but I had a mate with fatter tyres on the front of his Mini and that was fine (though it was several years ago). If there is such a rule, I would think it would be not to have thinner driven wheels.

Also, looking at http://www.ukmot.com/4-1.asp#Text_top I can see no reference to that. Different sizes on the same axle is a fail; different tyre types (e.g. cross ply and radial) in certain arrangements is also a fail.

Obviously don't take my word for it, just going on the above. A quick call to your local garage will obviously clarify.

I'll ring the garage tmrw - obvious solution would be 225 front, 215 back.

as an mot tester this how you stand.

your car can NOT fail its mot if the tyre size differs from front to rear, as long as the same size tyre is fitted to the same axle.

normally the larger tyres are fitted to the driven wheels , and a slightly different size to the non driven wheel will not make the car dangerous to use on a public road.

if you car is 4 wheel drive then all four tyres need to be the same size.

Thanks - it's a bawbag needing to go down to 215 on the rear just cause I have some rub on very bumpy roads or when loaded - but will save me swapping the wheels front to back prior to taking it for MOT!

With it being So front heavy I doubt very much 215 at the back and 225 at the front will make much difference handling wise (apart form make it more exciting!) esp since I'll get some decent tyres for the back.

i saw a jap video of a drift comp, where they drove a pole round the arches of a very nice looking skyline lol
and it worked!

but heres some youth trying to replicate it lol

If someone did that to my car I'd slap them!

I've read into the fender rolling looks a bit dodgy if you can help it so will just go for 215 tyres on the back.
