CD Player off message on Display

Hi there back in Volvo ownership after a year or so away,bought a 1999 V40 Diesel (financial needs) anyway no service books etc, tried switching on Radio all i get is a message saying "off", i know these radios need a code but shouldn,t it read "code" on the display? Thanks for any help

I think they do this if there has been several attempts to put an incorrect code in
