    Unhappy Mayo ???

    Connie is using/losing coolant.
    She is a 2001 C70 2.4T auto.

Complete expasion tank in 365 miles.

No visable signs of a leak in the engine bay or on the floor.

Photo is of the oil filler cap and top of the filler point.

    Is it the head gasket?

    Other symptoms/issues
When cruising the temp gauge sits at about 1/4 of the way up the gauge.
In traffic it never goes above 1/2 way up the gauge.
After being in traffic and then cruising temp drops back to 1/4 on the gauge.
Very little heat from the heater.

    Thoughts and comment appreciated.

One last question - Where is the dipstick for the auto fluid level? Darned if I can see one and no owners manual.

    Steve

Firstly, don't be too worried about a bit of mayo under the oil cap. I don't recall a single day when my S70 didn't have it there and all the way up the dipstick.

It sounds to me like your heater matrix has a leak. This would explain the water loss and the lack of heat from the heater. Have a look at this thread on VOC, it shows the removal of the matrix.

As for the auto dipstick; looking from the front of the car, locate the top cover over the radiator fan, and it's immediately to the right between the radiator fan and the air intake pipe.

It's number 10 on this diagram:

Bear in mind that sometimes a leak from a component can be untraceable. Why I've no idea, but that's life!

    Thanks for the manual extract.

No dipstick there though and no pipe for one to go into.

    Very strange.

The dipstick is actually hidden away underneath the pipes at the bottom of your pic - try shining a torch down there if it's a bit dark & dirty - It's either orange or yellow.

Dipstick - I think I must be a blind one

    Disconnected the airfeed - Nothing.

Looked under the pipes - Nothing.

    More photo's.....

If it is there i'm now not sure I want to tank it out anyway... Would never get the thing back in!!!!!

Anyway are you in agreement that it doesn't look like the head gasket has gone then?

You could have 2 problems. Firstly sounds like your stat is kaput so a renew, had same prob on mine.
Second it may well be a leaky water pump and you won't see this leak so easy.
Has the car been laid up at all ? Go for the cheapest and obvious first.
    Hope this helps.

I believe the car was laid up for at least 3 months prior to me buying it.

Aha ! water pumps do not like standing still and can leak when put back into operation. They are a bugger to find the leak, usually a tell tale sign is a rust stain where it trickles out and the stat will be stuck for sure.
Got mine from rufe, some do not contain the rubber seal

OK. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Connie has now gone away for a weeks holiday - Back to the dealer who sold her to me to resolve the issue of the leaking coolant.

Thankfully she came with three months engine and gearbox warranty.

I'll try and find the dipstick again when she returns!!!

Probably a bit late for input but if your only running short journeys then your bound to get some "mayo" as the engine isnt truly heating itself and there will be condensation. Ive had it loads of times on various cars, simple solution is to take the car on a good run (50 miles of so) and it should have gone. Its when you start seeing mayo all over the dipstick that you need to be on the cautious side.
Arguing is pointless....she may not be right but she's never wrong

Tell her a remap is just having your satnav updated.....

The yellow (or orange) dipstick for Auto box oil is way forward (towards the nose) and just over one third of the width of the engine bay in to the centre from the passengers side.

It is buried all the way down past almost every pipe. Usually the last one covering it is the bottom radiator hose. (very large diamiter rubber hose)

    To close this one out.

Connie came back from the sales place.

She was losing coolant from the header tank to hose joint.

Off my own back I have since changed the tank, level sensor, cap and stat.

She is now holding her water and her temperature.

Only thing left to do now is to fit the tow bar so we can pull the additional fuel tanks (LOL).

She is one heck of a greedy girl.

Just glad I have Skippy - a Skoda VAG slag for the hack to work and back. 2000 model Octavia estate 1.9 TDI 90 bhp (feel the power) returning 63 MPG....
