If the paint that's already on there is in good enough condition then just flat it back and use that as your primer, paint with enough base coat (your colour) to get a decent even colour (usuall about 2 coats), then laquer (at least 3 coats).

Given the price of paint, and the difficulty getting a perfect finish, I would, on the basis that one bad panel RUINS a car, get a specialist to do it really well. Unless you happen to have a dust free booth to hand - in which case I guess you would not be asking the question.
I have sprayed a few cars over the years, and it is very difficult to get a decent finish - really a case of penny wise, pound foolish to do it if you don't have the right gear. It looks easy, but it isn't.
Sorry to be a c**t but want to save you the effort and money producing a disappointing result.

I have to agree with the previous reply, the final job ( Top coat ) is only as good as the preperation underneath, the top coat is the one that gives the colour, poor prep will give poor finish... as for spraying outside of a booth, well, put a lot of paint on and you have plenty to mop off and get a finish, I have sprayed cars outside!!! but the weather has to be good, no wind, no flies!!! and no neighbours!!!
Get a bodyshop to do it, saves you money and grief...
Thanks for your coments, I've got a spare bonnet and the equipment as in compressor, airline, watertrap/filter and a wooden shed 8-( , I just thought I'd have go and if it didn't work out I've not lost much just the price of paint and man hrs.
I paint my own panels regularly at home with a similar setup and provided you prep properly (brush up and wet the floor to cut down on the dust) you can get a good finish, yes you would probably get a better finish if it was done in a booth but that cost's a lot more than just the price of the paint, if you know how and you've got the gear then give it a go, why pay someone else to do a job that you can do yourself?.
