Oh dear - it never rains but pours :( :(

With Mas's S60 probs I now have a problem with my V70. It is making a noise which gets louder the faster you - you start to hear it from about 25mph. It started making this noise not long after I had new front tyres fitted so I thought that would be the answer so yesterday Mas swapped the wheels front to rear etc but the noise is still there. I am now thinking either wheel bearings or driveshaft Anyone any suggestions ? It will be going to our local mechanic guy tomorrow for him to have a listen and hopefully diagnose.

Is the noise concurrent with the speed of the wheels - wheel bearings normally have a rhythmic beat - audible with the clutch depressed. Check also the integrity of the CV boot.

Hope you find a solution soon

Does it still make the noise in the N position whilst moving?

Er - pass. I have just asked Mas to try that out on his way home & to let me know We had a quick look at cv boots yesterday whilst the wheels were off and they visually looked ok.

Am I right in thinking that if the driveshaft(S) were the problem the noise would be more of a rumbling sound or have I got that completely wrong ?

OK Mas has reported back - the car still makes the noise if in N and moving braking makes no difference either except that the noise lessens as the car slows.

I believe that in N position the clutches are disengaged - so whilst you are not truely ever disconnected from the transmisssion - it would give a better indication as to whether it was a gear box problem or a wheel bearing.

I suspect it will be the latter.

Like I said - it never rains but pours !!!! Went out this morning only to find a puncture so toddled off to the tyre centre - puncture could not be repaired as a cut to the inner wall so new tyre. Whilst there I told them about the noise and they had a look and said my osf wheel bearing u/s. Also I had both front wheels balanced and whilst doing that they also found that the nsf track rod end needs replacing. So, whilst not overly major thank god it is turning out to be a very expensive week for us

Get your spanners out! Wheel bearings are easy, you just need a very big hammer

No big hammer really needed on wheel bearings, as it comes with housing, its just the E15 or whatever size it it bolts that need removing. I did V70 ones about 30 mins a side

OK willing to have a go (well Mas is ) Do you literally just have to take the wheel and hub of or do you have to remove the brake caliper as well ?

carrier need not be separated to remove the caliper. You can if you want?

You need to split the bottom ball joint - probably where PTT got his big hammer out??

Breaking the drive shaft bolt is not difficult on 70 series. On 850 they are a pig!
