Question Is this a good idea ?

A Local neighbour has been a mechanic for the GPO for years and i was telling him about the one sticky tappet i have on my T5

He suggested putting half a litre of gearbox oil in the top, letting it soak for a couple of minutes and then running the engine for 10 minutes on tick over before doing an oil and filter change with a good quality oil.

Is it a good idea or not ? i dont fancy trying it and having even more problems.

But at the same time the bloody ticking is really loud sometimes and does my head in big time and im ready for trying anything IF its not going to fubar something in the process.

    Cheers guys

Have you tried some hydraulic lifter cleaner? Proper trade stuff, not the muck you get from halfords

    Ouch

20 new lifters @ £6 a piece then labour, the liquid gasket, the list goes on.

Then you need cam lock tools or i'd attempt it myself.

Sounds painful. What is the hourly rate for garages in the NW? About £65 upwards around here in SE London. THe crunch has not hit these prices.

Apparently Seafoam is the stuff to use to clean carbon deposits out of an engine, it's particularly good for noisy tappets.

Seafoam is used in the inlet or the fuel only, not in the oil - so it would be unlikely to make any difference to lifters.

Just mark the cams with a bit of tippex and the crank as well with the mark on the crank and you will be fine mate.

Im sure ive got half a tube of the head gasket liquid somewhere from when i did my head a couple of months ago..will dig it out for you, no use to me.
